frozen snow and ice on the walks, sounds Like walking on a bowl of cornflakes. Shovel wont touch it, too hard going to have to wait until the sun hits it, whenever that may be.

We are into our 5th year here and Mother Nature has always looked after the icy stuff by sending us a warm spell.
I am like you and will not use salt on the driveway nor our sidewalk. Also, if the town sidewalk was very frozen, I would have no qualms about using salt on it.
I do notice that down the street some used salt and the concrete is spalling away.
