why??

I’ve got a full speedwerx tunnel dump on my sled...barely louder than stock. All the benefits of light weight and power without the noise.

I hate loud pipes on anything...I think they are obnoxious. Each to there own I guess, if you don’t mind a lot of people thinking your a dick.

The loud can is great for hearing where your buddy is. The downside is the balance of the sled is thrown off. Ran a ggb on my 174xm, left the stock suitcase on my 175. The main reason the retards want to close the areas is jealousy of the freedom of a snowmobile.

Loud cans are simply obnoxious. If you use the can as an excuse to find your buddy, get a radio. Cans are an easy way to drop weight, but still sound decent if you choose the right one. Some guys just need to be flashy and say "look at me"

Thing cooker was way too loud on my XM, too bad cause I liked the cooking functionality. Now have the SLP can and it's still a bit loud but better. Wish there was another step quieter without having to go back to the heavy stock suitcase.

People get really hung up on this but the negatives of can's on today's sleds far exceed the positives. The only advantage you get with a can is less weight, that only counts on a scale. While riding it is non noticeable. So guys that like static scale weight brags love can's.
So do those looking for attention, LOL.
There are ZERO performance gains out of can's and like mentioned already they throw the balance of the sled off, though most will not notice as most do not know how to tune a suspension properly and would assume bitching on line on how their sled doesn't side hill or washes out...blablabla...and end up riding sleds with gimmick's to make up for their lack off intellect and skill.
The manufactures put alot of effort in tuning their motors to maximize their performance with the mufflers they come with while meeting EPA standards. Yes there are aftermarket "mufflers" that will enhance the sound over the lame oem muffler and not impede performance but they are not "CAN'S".

Wow, sounds like you know a lot about this subject. Did you spend time working for one of these companies spending countless hours testing their products ensuring that they won’t lose horsepower? Or are you possibly an engineer with a background in flow testing and acoustic dynamics? I’m not sure how you ever could have been because it seems you are able to improve the clutching and suspension that every manufacturer uses today. Judging by your posts you must ride every day for 6 months a year to be that much more skilled at mountain riding than everyone else, it must be tough to be the smartest and the most naturally athletic rider on the hill every day.

Point is, who gives a flying fk what can a guy is running, I personally don’t like loud cans but if I come across somebody that has one, I leave, typically that’s kinda the point, ride where other people aren’t. To say that they don’t know how to ride because they run a loud can is the reason people are leaving this sh&$hole site every day, because all you old a$$holes are better and smarter than everyone else. I’d love to see you and your yamatoilet attempt to keep up to what these young guys are doing on the hill let alone follow them in the trees. For a guy that served you seem to have forgotten how to respect others.

This is the SLP silencer I'm using, maybe it falls more into the "muffler" category. It was supposed to be one of the quiestest and best performing cans for the XM. Think once the season gets going for me I'll swap the stock muffler back in and see if I notice any performance gains.

edit by "best performing" I don't necessarily mean increase over stock, just not losing much if any over stock

Well experience does count for something, and yes he is right on everything he said, and has been actually saying it for years.

Here are the negatives to aftermarket cans that I have personally noticed and took the time to figure out.
Increased underhood temps which affects alot more than everyone thinks. No that fancy looking ceramic coating is too thin to actually do any good.
Screws up the balance of the sled and ski pressures.
90% of cans will actually make a sled loose HP, but if yah never run the stock can first, how do yah know?
the sound of the can, even tho while riding the sled it does not sound loud to the rider, alot of cans are actually very loud.
Last is the cost! These cans are getting crazy in pricing, till these are actually engineered like the stock exhaust and proven reliable, I’ll pass.

The only positive I see to running a can is the extra space it frees up around the chaincase, thats it.

We (wife and I) have run SLP's silencers and (sometimes) pipe sets for the weight loss and YES improved performance. Just the silencer and minor clutching changes do make a noticeable difference.
We do shop for the quietest set up available to shed (usually 10-15lbs) and improve performance.
if I could achieve the same with the stock silencer we would save the money. Certainly would not run a setup that is excessively loud. The other problem that the stock silencer creates is no space for our cookers and we enjoy a hot meal!
The main reason we have used SLP's exhaust products over the years has been the minimal increase in sound levels while
improving throttle response and HP to weight ratio.

Every time I drive through the neighborhood around owlhead staging, I feel sorry for the people living there. There seems to always be someone like MC who doesn't give a rat's tail about others. Leave the braaping and full throttle until you are off the parking lot and at least around the first bend up the road.
Oh empathy and common sense... where art thou?
