Just wondering opinions on where I should go on Saturday with my 8 year old. Which do you think is better suited for him. He rides a 600. Looking for some easy trails and maybe a little bowl. Never been to either area. What do you think. Thanks

Both are good choices! Make sure you have plates and reg at cataract, fish cops love to prey on folks there.

You could also consider staging at Coal Creek in Fernie. Nice groomed trail to two cabins and lots of easy, safe riding around both cabins.

FYI according to regulations in Alberta an operator must be 14 years of age to independently operate a snowmobile on public land. Cataract may not be the best option in light of that.

little concerned don't want to get in trouble but I'm sure I've seen young kids on the trail operating they're own machine. Anyone with more info. Wouldn't this be the same as atving or dirt biking. What about bc. Thanks

if you go and read it, if I recall correctly, there is a major difference between a young kid ripping on their own, and having an adult right behind them supervising.

if in doubt, the local RCMP detachment SHOULD be willing to give you a solid answer.

Don't know how much snow at Cataract by the weekend with all these warm temps and sunshine. You might have to go a little farther west. Don't know if I'd be taking my kid to a mainstream area to learn, lots of guys on them trails going too fast. need a spot where u 2 are alone.

Another option would be to head out west of Sundre or Caroline and hit the cutlines out there. Less chance of a run in with Fish and Feathers i would think plus much less traffic than a lot of the areas. Don't need to have beacons that way either since the terrain is more mellow.

I grew up learning to ride out west of Drayton Valley and that was perfect to learn and develop the skills to ride in the mountains for the past 20 years.

Stay away from the Bearberry country west of Sundre the snow is pretty skinny out there. West of Caroline may be a better choice.
