Even with the tether shutting the sled off, if the downhill is steep enough the sled will keep going, and going and going. I watched mine go about 400 feet until a tree stopped it.

i hear ya,had the same thing happen to me but luckly it stopped about 20ft short of bluff of trees, otherwise would've been pretty ugly.

The wirless TethAir I saw at the Edmonton show looked pretty good.
Simple installation and you were the wireless remote in your wrist.
When you get a certain distance from the reciever the sled automatically shutdown.

I forget how much they were selling for at the show.

Never ride without some king of tether.
If not for yourself, the other people the sled might hit and kill because a person thought it was not a neccesity.......

SAFETY FIRST! Small cost for a lifeasaver!!!!

Make sure you have insurance also!!!!!!!!!!

a buddy was riding up a very small hill that narrowed between a small bunch of trees, where there was a patch of ice. he got sideways and fell off the sled. Luckily he was able to make a grab for the sled and get a hand full of throttle to dig the sled in. Had he been wearing the tether he would have been hiring a chopper for sure and possibly ending his season.

IMO the tether has its place. for small kids and maybe for trail riding. Most of the clutches on mountain sleds back shift and slow the sled. but I dont think they will continue if the engine stalls

I will never ride without a tether again. Last year i was climbing a hill. the track trenched and hit a rock. The sled through me forward and my backpack got caught around the handlebars. The sled stopped, started roling backward and rolled on its side. When it went on its side my backpack pinned the throttle. I was also pinned under the sled and my hands were unusable. luckily my teather pulled off so the sled shut down. if it weren't for the tether I would have had a sled on top of me pinned wide open and nothing i could do about it.

I had a bad experience and was lucky I had the tether on. I got bucked off of a friend's sled, he had a lefty throttle. I fell backwards and sideways with my head right next to the track. My left foot jammed between the gas tank and the lefy handle bar, thus pinning the lefty wide open.
It is a helpless feeling being inches away from a spinning track that could tear your arm or even your head off. Luckily I had a tether o, yanked it and killed the sled.

That is why I think a teth-air would have not helped me. If you can't ride with a tether, and think it will hinder your riding ability, you obviously never used one.

Would the same thing happen of the throttle has stuck???

I installed one for a different reason but ended up always using it. I take my three year old out for rides around the acreage witch is innocent enough but he likes to grab a handful of throttle everyones and awhile . And if feared if that happened I would get bucked off of the back. so tether it is. Now I where it all the time. It is just common sense.

there good to have had a buddy unload his summit out of the truck after a long drive fired it up and the throtle was frozen wide open. sled took off hit his dads sled and sat tangled together spining in a circle till he was able to hit the kill switch. dont know if a tether would have helped cause you dont normally use it when warming up the sled but Chit does go south fast.

I notice the new HCR's come with tethers. Aren't the DESS keys on Doo's tethers as well? But I agree that they should all come with them - be it mtn sled, 120 kids sled, 600 two-upper-deluxo or whatever.

The problem is when they tangle with the handlebars (or trees) during "less than graceful maneuvers". Then people get annoyed and they aren't attached anymore - similar to how kill switches on the handlebars seem to end up with rubber bands under them, neutering their functionality. Teth-air has a decent solution, but it'll probably be a while before the costs come down so that it's a no-brainer.

A good question is where to mount it so that it isn't tangling all the time? I was thinking of putting one right up under the mountain bar somewhere on the top of the steering post. Should keep it out of the way there maybe?

My tether has got caught on a tree and pulled by mistake once. It's saved me from run-a-way sleds/engines at least 6 times through the years. It's a no brainer for me! In fact, I wish someone would invent one that applies the brake when it's pulled too! Could have saved me some plastic!
