Automatic Tip In Effect...should this not be posted somewhere for the patron to see????

I can't beleive that they automatically do this anyway....am I mising something? Since when does it become mandatory to give a tip or to automatically charge it to your card? Unless its posted and even then....if you didin't know about it....I would almost call it theft! Its another one of them things that we as Canadians can pride ourselves in...the industry got creative and us Canadians would rather just suck it up....its BS in my mind and I'll be watching my bills alot closer.....not that a guys cheap by any means...just treat one fair and it will come....but to automatically do it is WRONG!

In France gratuities are calculated into the price of the meal, but there waiting tables is treated as a proffession, we never ran into a waiter that didn't earn their tip.

This whole thing does not make sense anyway. They have totally changed what a TIP even means. Buggers. What ever happened to just doing your job. Why do we have to tip these people. Where does this come from, and who is making these rules. It's absolute BS. I just tipped a taxi cab driver a couple days ago. WHY did I do that, it's his job driving that cab, aghh.

We have to tip so that bars and restaurants can get away with not paying people a living wage.
The place my neice worked at in the city forced the wait staff to put part of their pay into a kitty to cover people walking out without paying, (which is illegal) but is a kid working to pay for University going to b1tch?

Maybe the same but when I was in Australia a few years ago there is no requirement to tip for meals at restaurant..........you can also take your own wine there to your table and they just charge you a 'corking fee' to open the bottle. Not a bad place...........

I tip a lot more than 15% if it's good service. when we were in California I was somewhat surprised to see how everywhere added it to the bill. I'll bet none of that automatic "gratuity" ever gets to the servers. I tipped them separately anyways.

I've discovered that tipping on debit or credit card don't always make it to the servers. Some managers/owners "forget" to pass it on to their staff. I try to tip in cash now so the servers get what they've earned...

Doing it via debit/credit card would make the money considered income, therefore taxable by the government would it not?
Its a tip, not a payment.

When we were in Japan, we received the best service for EVERYTHING we have ever recieved in our lives. They do not expect a tip, nor would they accept it if you offered. An honest and respuctful thank you was all they needed. They do however get paid well for the the work they do and service is an expectation of the job.
A lot of countries that don't have tipping pay the employees what they are worth. I agree with the ealrier comment that tipping in North America only allows the business owners to get away with hiring cheap labour.
Tipping is based on service...simple as that. AN expectation of a tip without service or having it added to the bill BEFORE you even start your dinner is like being robbed the moment you walk in.
I prefer to tip cash so the server can do with it has they wish. I will tip generously for the right service.

Allot of the big chains do this
I think it is BS. Why should the servers have to pay for a thief. I'm sure that they make more in a year than what was stolen. Where does the money go? The more stand up places will put it into staff parties but I know allot goes into the wrong persons pocket. When I was youngerI worked at a place that did this, however like said above when 18ish and happy to have a job what do you say
the place I worked at had two dine and dash in a year one got away the other scrapped it out with the staff in the parking lot, which I don't think was in the job discription
