Just got back from Honolulu:av-31: and of course tipping and holidays seem to go hand in hand. I believe that for good food and service one should tip, say inbetween 10% to 15%, on holidays I noticed some restaurants were already adding a 18% tip to your bill regardless of the food or service. This really frosts my jewels:nono: as tipping should not be expected but rewarded for better than average service and outstanding food. Some restaurants are adding a tip chart so their clients know what to tip and they say gartuity should be from 18% to 20%, what's next 20% to 30%. Well this is my two bits on the subject, any feedback!

I agree thats is B.S. The issue is most restaurants don't have the service they once did because the employees dont really care. The quality of the people is missing. No one takes pride in what they do anymore. (See i have a drug problem post) Therefore they have to add the automated tip because they most likely dont deserve one. :d

I came across this in Dec. in Edmonton and the restaurant had a automatic tip deal for a group over 8, it was 15%, no problem with that. Never heard anyone tell me, I dont mind that amount. But when I did the visa thing I added another $24.00 on top of the 15%. When i got home i spotted it on my receipt little pissed called the guy and he was a dickhead :rant:about it.
That kind of sh!t gets a guy angry, wont visit that place agaign.

yeah this is bs. i was in a restraunt the other day and the server was trying to tell me how 20% is pretty standard now...lol ooooooooooooooook. good luck with that.

the way i see it. if i get excellent service and food i will give what i feel is the right amount whether it be 5-20%. maybe nothing who knows.

the other thing i love now is when you buy fast food and the tip option is on the keypad!

give me a break.

you should try going on a disney cruise they leave the envelopes in your room the last night on ship with the amount a family of 4 should pay every body. The room cleaner, head waiter, waiter the guy that gets you the drinks for the waiter it would have like 250 bucks US now that's a real scam sure good service but come on now.

no chit eh?!!!!! I bought 5 extra large pizza's the other day (take out) cost me $90.00 and she was a little jerked when I diodn't tip her ????? BS for sure....I don't mind if a person is getting a service or they take care of you ....then for sure giv'em a tip....one christmas took our staff out....food was 2 hours late....cold and as soon as we started eating they fired up a Fugging vacume cleaner....then added almost a $200.00 tip to the bill....I told them to either redo the visa or I wasn't signing it. The waitress got a tip for her efforts but no one else and they tried makin me feel like I was the arse hole!

I agree 100% with everyone here....I had the same problem as blastoff at a pub in Calgary. There were 6 of us at a table, the waitress was great but she never said a word about their mandatory 18% gratuity on groups of 6 or more so I too gave a pretty decent tip because she was great....and hot - but that's beside the point :d then I looked at the receipt the next day and saw that I ended up giving her like a $48 tip combined!! What a joke.

Here's another scenario to throw in to the mix...the frigin morons that own or work at the restaurants that feel you should tip for a buffet?!!! F*@K that noise....for what?? What exactly did they do besides show you to your seat??? Uuhh, thanks - probably could have done that myself as well!! lol..

i might be a little biased towards hot girls that pretend to hit on me too :D

but yeah....the other thing i dont understand is that some of those tips the servers do not get. it gets split between all the staff and the restraunt? is that true for everywhere or im assuming some places are differant.

years ago it was customary to slip a few bills to the Maitre d' to bump your reservation in a restaurant.

going back to my story if the tip is automatic I dont have a problem with that but then the f- ing visa tip part should be over riden when it is mandatory 15% or better. This is BS they are double dipping arses.
Man u know after a month I am still p!ssed about it. also the waitress is a douche because she knows whats going on but takes advantage of it.

The friggin sneaky buggers. I watch for that all the time, adding the 18% and not telling you. That should be a free meal. lol. The whole tipping thing is absolutely BS. I tip often when I have my kids with me, and they make a bit of a mess, or get colors to keep them quiet. Other then that, total BS. I don't get a tip when I do a good job at work. When I get my well done $20,000 under budget. They tell me good job, and I smile with pride. I don't put my hand out.

If they dont have any posting's or inform you about a mandatory % tip, they cant lawfully enforce it right?

Tipping is the customer's choice. IMO there is no % of what you should do. How much i throw in all depends on the serves and hospitality. and If you were crap, you get crap. If your good, i will throw a couple bucks for my portion. If you make my evening very enjoyable, my tip will go up more.

I usually give somewhere in the 20% range if my beer mug is never empty.

The place that a tip really pays off is at the snowmobile repair shop. I always give my mechanic enough to take he and his wife out to dinner. My sled is always done early and done right.

There is a place that we found out after the fact has a automatic tip, yep learned after i signed the bill....Yes i was annoyed but not half as annoyed as they were when i went back the next night with 3 kids under 6 and let them play hard. Typically i will tidy up after them, not this time:d
