Just purchased a 2003 Summit 800. Looks nice and clean, motor is stock and it hasn't been ripped apart but it has 4000kms on it.
I know it depends on many things but any opinions out there on how much longer the motor will last before it gives me problems or is it 1 ride away from going "boom!?"

Thanks

who knows.

put 1000km on it and then rebuild the top end.

might get 7000 on the bottom end before it needs some attention providing the grease inthe pto bearing is looked at.

You might want to spend a little on the top end as a preventative .My 02 doo 800 had a piston skirt come apart taking out a cyl and the crank which ends up costing plenty more.Yes I would say unless you replace pistons and rings your looking at a ticking time bomb.BTW stators usually go with that many miles aswell

I think that it kind of depends on where you ride. If it would be an easy tow out to the truck then run her this winter then do the top end next summer. If on the other hand it would be a 1500$-2000$ heli lift and then another 2000$-2500$ repair bill because the cases and crank went too, I would tear it down now instead of gambling. The places we ride we are starting to take into account that it is often impossible to tow the sled out so why not do a less expensive preventative repair to begin with, even though sometimes the unexpected happens and I have been heli lifted out.

Just did topend rebuild on one the other day, bill for parts came out to around $650. Sounds high, but not when you look at the price of new cases if you drop a piston.

I had my 03 crater at 3200 km and my buddy did his 02 at the same time, 3500 km on his and when he pulled it apart there was a crack starting in the piston skirt. Can rebuild it for under 500 bills if you do it before it craters. Just consider it preventative maintenance and peace of mind.
