I didnt think the distracted driving law could be enforced, but now living in both Brandon MB and Airdrie I see different. In Brandon the local city police enforced the distracted law, here in Airdrie the local rent-a-cops are going hard setting up check stops for seatbelts and distracted driving.
Shouldn't need the law, people should be smart enough to not let their kids breath in that garbage. It's a fine line I really don't like laws like this but I think it will benefit some kids who have retarded parents. I would think any good parent would want to avoid having their kids start smoking. I don't understand the habit and how people can smoke and knowingly destroy their health, but whatever as long as they keep it to only hurt themselves.

I saw a cop trying to stop a woman talking on her cell phone while driving in her Yukon yesterday....met her and the cop with his lights on about halfway down the west hill coming into Peace River, flipped on the RC channel and he finally got her stopped on the east side of the bridge. wonder if she got one

Exactly, im not for another law, but smokers are dirtbags. Always needing a smoke, always needing to buy smokes, needing a lighter, can a bum a smoke, cant i have a lighter. Like fawk......you smoke every 30 minutes, how do you not have the single most important item in your life always on you. They will do whatever they can to have a smoke or get new smokes........even if its picking buts off of the ground. I wish i smoked, lucky bastads can leave work every 30 minutes for a 5 minute smoke, maybe i should just go for a 5 minute walk every 30 minutes getting fresh air, or getting exerciser, at least im doing my body good.

My work doesn't, you smoke at a regular break and that's it you can't smoke and work at the same time. Had a few guys quit over it as they can't go more then 20 mins without one and it doesn't fly. I refuse to be anywhere near someone who is smoking.

May not be a smart choice but it's still a choice and I try to be respectful about it. I understand being a douche-canoe is not a choice but you could still try to be respectful about it...

I used to smoke and we all know that the worst critic is a reformed smoker. I have mixed feelings about this issue as a father and a grandfather of 4 boys, i do feel that it is my responsibilty to set a good example. I had quit to keep my kids from smoking, well that didn't work so well so I hope that I set a good example for my grandsons. Kids in a car are trapped with the fumes you create. We all know that smoking is not good for you except under times of stress and its the butt or the kid (jk). There are so many ways to do yourself in but the People Who Want to Protect From Yourself are getting more brazen at every turn. Hell we now have a bylaw that will get passed that you can't smoke a park when kids are present, this is getting ridiculous. Either the government declare smoking illegal and stop making money on it or leave people be. As Bogger said it is slippery slope and I for one would love to backhand Les Hagen upside the head as he is a pompus prick.

one by one our rights are being taken away and the vast majority of people either dont care or are actually happy that they make these little laws. dont get me wrong i dont think anyone should smoke in a vehicle with children on board but where does it stop and who draws the line!!

I truly don't think there is a need for the name calling, pathetic, drug addicts, dirt bags........really???? I don't care WHO you are, everyone has at least ONE bad habit. I am a smoker, who grew up in a smoking home......a habit I started at 14. My sister, dosen't smoke. That is what I knew when I had my son. I however, like Bogger ensure the window is open the few times (long hockey trips) that I smoke in my car. I know it's a addiction. I know it's not good for me.............unfortunatly I enjoy it. I work, I pay for my own cigarettes, I am respectful and don't toss my butts all over the place.
My issue is these bloody laws the government keeps passing. To me unless they are making my vehicle payment who are they to tell me what I can and can't do. More and more the government is taking away our control. Funny how smokers are targeted for costing the medical system millions of dollars while no one ever mentions the Drug Companies or the damage prescription drugs can do to your liver and kidneys. A lot of people die in this country everyday because of prescription drugs and their side effects. While I appreciate the desire to protect children from second-hand smoke exposure in cars, I'm afraid that the suggestion to ban smoking in cars occupied by children represents an unwarranted intrusion into the privacy and autonomy of parenthood. The autonomy to make one's own decision about what risks to subject a child
to is not to be interfered with lightly. It should only be done in cases where there is a substantial threat of severe harm to the child.
Interfering with parental autonomy in a case where there is only minor risk involved is unwarranted. What about all the preservitives the government ok's that are put in our foods, that they are finding to become more and more harmful??? What about all the emmissions in the air from our vehicles that we all breath in daily???
Really people what's next? I can't have sex with my husband while my children are in the home, they might catch us and be scared for life. Parents can't let their children sleep with them cuz that's dangerous too! Parents can't drink alcohol while the children are in the home that causes far more harm then smoking! I'm all for being healthier and no exposing people to harmful second hand smoke but this is a very slippery slope and it seems never ending!! What will the next cause be? And how long will it take to get the masses on board to support legislation to ban it?? I can't believe everyone is ok with all the gov't intrusion into our lives? I would love to see it illegal to drink or consume alcohol within 12hrs of being around children. Most health care workers would agree they see way more damage from that, then cigarettes. So watch out you might be next! You can't make stupidity illegal!!

It has been proved over and over how bad second hand smoke is for everyone, especially kids. I can't even be in a vehicle that's been smoked in and without it affecting me horribly. Even if your opening windows, they are still breathing it in and affected, and it's in EVERYTHING for YEARS. Trust me, I use to be in company vehicles and absolutely refused to be in one with someone who smoked because it affects you. And how many companies even allow smoking in their vehicles, don't see many complaining about that.
I have a hard time breathing if i'm around smoking and my eyes bother me really bad. NOTHING else EVER bothers me, even smoke from anything else and MANY people have this. Imagine how it's damaging lungs that are still developing.
Alcoholism is just as bad for a person, but it only destroys the person doing it, not others THAT is the difference.
The law came in because people are to stupid to raise their children properly. Blame the stupid people for the law. Anyone with half a brain will not be affected by this law.

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life but I love cigars. I'm not addicted. I could quit right now if I wanted, but i don't want to. I love the taste of cigars, I like to smoke a cigar while i drive, suddenly I am a pathetic criminal? Get off your high horse.
