Thoughts: New Short Block, Rebuild Short / Long Block, Used Engine

Ok, if you been following my other threads. You’ll know I’m considering replacing my 2015 summit 800 etc engine. It still runs fine, but my compression is low and my crank runout is out of spec at 0.02 in (spec 0.0024 in).

I’ll do the swap myself. I’m looking for feedback on which way to go.

Brand new short block $3600
Umatek short block $2200
Rebuilt long block with crank warranty $2650
2013 used etec with only 328km $2500 ish
2014 used etec with 2300km $2200

Didn’t 2013 have piston issues?

Are you mechanical enough to just rebuild it yourself?

I might be able to help you out if your not in a huge hurry, Going to have a rebuilt long lock in a week or too, just got to rebuilld top end, Might have another 800 etec with a 1000 k on it next weekend.Thise prices are good, I have a freind who sell rebuilt from the bottom up engines.

Were u get a brand new 800 etec ? Dont think skidoo sells them anymore? How many km u get out of it ?

Depends on your expectations and how much you ride.
I would find difficult to spend $2500-4k on sled only worth 3-4k unless you have an attachment to it. You could also sell it, add the money that you're willing to spend on an engine, and you're now into budget G4 territory. A substantial upgrade IMO.

Bent chassis. Worn out engine. That sled is done. Don't waste your time. It isn't worth the money or headache to fix, trust me.
Do nothing and ride it as is 'till it don't go no more or replace it and move on. There are literally dozens of good used sleds on marketplace.

If sledding is your thing it's gone-a cost yaa 1 way or the other...

We were looking at a return too sledding the mountains threw-out all of bc but decided too ( not ) bite the bullet since We have other hobbies that run on penny's too the dollar (s)...

It depends on what you can and can't afford,,, no one is going too tell you any different...

Life is simple if you don't have a game plan... lol

850s are junk. I think this petson wants a sled that will go 10,000km for sled skiing.
New motor in the xm will do that.

7g USed 850 g4 will just leave you walking....lmao

If the sled is all bent up might not be worth it.

Usually can straighten those XMs out good enough with a hammer though....

If it was top end I would do, but just working through all that crank tolerance stuff seems like a lot of stuff for me to stress over. Last time Idid a full rebuild I had my dad who knew people at the machine shop who did these steps.

They still say brand new shortblocks. Instock at the edson dealer. But no factory rebuilt long blocks anymore.

So i originally ordered all new bushings and ball joints, then found the crack s-module, which I then ordered before I discovered this engine stuff. So I have $1000 in parts on my garage floor. I agree, if I knew everything at beginning I may of just sold it as it. But at this i think selling it ripped apart and trying to sell my parts on marketplace doesn't make sense. At the least i need to put it back together, but I also have a hard time selling someone a sled with end of life engine without disclosing.

Your correct, I want reliable sled to access skiing. I like the Gen 4, but I'm not convinced buying a used 850 wont put me in this same spot in 2-3 years. My other big sled skiing friends did 1 engine replacements in their XMs around 5k, then sold them at 10k.

So i think most of my damage was caused by not noticing my cast piece was cracked for likely 3 years, which hammedered everything crooked and rivets loose.

If my sled was twisted i would of abandoned. I was planning to hammer back the e-module plate, but for $70 was just as easy to also replace. I think it was this bend which had my engine crooked. These rivets were the worse to remove.

Ya Ive done it a bunch of times. Loojs like ur well on your way to getting it fixed. And with a new engine it will last a long time

So to bring this back around to engine.

Brand new short block $3600 - Too expensive for sled value IMO.

Umatek short block $2200 - This is in Calgary. I’m guessing its a simple as just switching my head.

Rebuilt long block with crank warranty $2650 - this option currently where I'm leaning unless catmando and I work out something.

2013 used etec with only 328km $2100 with my core. Price is right, but a used engine makes me nervous.

PS: I have to either put my sled back together and deal with the engine later or buy a new sled before Wednesday, as I have a hut trip. So will have to rip it apart again.

I guess if ur looking at this like some sort of investment. Then 3600 is too much. But if you just want a good sled with a new motor. 3600 is pretty decent imo

The rebuilt one should be fine though as long as the guy that rebuilt it knows what they are doing.

i paid 3600 for a short block from riverside honda last month. Wish I would have taken sled to catmando instead but time was of the essence
Bill came to 6k with plastics, new battery, and a pull cord; Feel your pain but way she goes, just like a vehicle

Since you have the chassi parts already I would fix it, put the BRP short block in it and run it for sled access for a long time.

Those used engine prices seem rediculous to me..
