Thinking of a tin roof for my house- Thoughts?

So it is time to redo the shingles, house and garage. Has anybody made the switch to tin what are your thoughts pros, cons, cost diff.

definitely reduces the snow load.... just be sure to installgrates above the eves, my garage roof is tin and I don't have the picks/grates/whatever you call them installed and I end up with an ice bank in front of my garage whenever she slides...

well my thought is it looks gay if u live in a town but out on a farm it looks ok my uncle use tin looking shingles it looked awesome but it was $30000 to do if u use tin just leave the old shingles on strap the roof lay on the tin good 2 day job :d

I have a metal roof (on the house, large wood storage shed, and a shop) and it is great. If you have valleys, purchase heavier metal than the standard as the ice build up in the valley will tear the lighter gauge metal.

If your doors are in the line of the avalanche sluffing you will require some snow brakes. If the garage's entrance is along the side of roof you will require snow brakes. If your eaves trough has been installed properly the avalanche sluffing will not interfere with them.

Insurance is cheaper and maintenance is less. It is recommended to re-tighten the lag bolts every 5 years. Other than that, it is pretty much bullet proof.

I beg to differ. I saw one in Bonnyville and it looks great. Tin roofs have come a long way. Looks like shingles but I believe they are aluminum.

I am just pondering the thought of the tin at this point and am fairly uneducated in this subject, but is there a better style of tin, I noticed there are several different kinds of joints etc. Any ideas of the cost diff between a mid level tin and decent shingles? Likely only be in this house for another 5-10 years ish.

If you get a lot of hail the smoother type will look like crap after the hail dents it up. The tin that looks like shingles is pretty pricey but would withstand the hail.

And like the others mentioned, sliding snow will take out anything in it's way.

we used tin on our house in town some years ago, we got a hailstorm with golf ball sized hail and it destroyed the roof. not only dented it all up, but compromised the seal between the joints. anytime it rains it is also very loud inside the house....I won't use it again.

yeah pipes its the same stuff my uncle used its aluminum but $30000 wasnt cheap and i was talking about the tin u get at ufa i dont like it on houses in town but what do i know :d

Put tin on the parents house over 15 years ago, they live near the foothills out by Rocky and get some damn nasty storms (hail, 80kmh wind gusts...etc., and have never looked back. They don't have the snow/ice brakes and have to be sure to shovel it away quickly or live with the hump until spring. (they live in the country) We left the old shingles on, as the neighbour suggested, and they don't know it's raining or hailing until it either hits a window or they look outside. Now I am very sure aluminum roofing products have come leaps and bounds since. They used to have to do their roof every 10 years before and we even used 25 year shingles, again 15 years later with aluminum...absolutely no worries. The only way to go far as I can see...

Well living in Blue River 95% of the buildings in town are metal.....only way we would go .....oh and I love listening to the rain on the roof or listening to the snow crack when it is about to slide off......:d:d:d

I love my tin roof. You know if its raining without getting out of bed! I tighten screws every fall while i m sweeping chimney. Easy. Hard on gutters though

lol...we had a cat that would freak out when the snow cracked and slid off the tin roof. if it was sitting on you at the time it would use you for traction to get away. stupid cat

I love my tin roof..never had to shovel this winter because it slip off all the time! love the sound of the rain. looks good to! I went with brown but it comes in all colors......plain silver is the cheapest but looks cheap to! my deck is all under the roof but I heard when the snow comes off the roof, it tears railing off...... so watch out for that!

There called ice rakes. Any chimneys should be braced with a diverter so that the snow wont push them off. There are many different styles of metal roofs and many different install techniques.

I work for a company that does commercial roofing (EPDM/Rubber). I've worked on metal roofs for leaks/repairs and clearing snow in heavy foot traffic areas, like at a large country wide hardware store. Those roofs are pretty much solid. If a person needed to make holes to mount a satillite dish or anything, The maintenece is real easy. Just don't go up there when there is snow on them. They are so slippery, like a crazy carpet that doesn't move. You just fall on your arse ever time and slide to the edge.

put a rubber roof on our new house made from recycled tires they look like shakes and have a 50 year warranty hail storm went through 2 years ago hail bounds off 3 feet in the air no damage

I agree with you 100% the UFA tin looks like crap. $30000 WOW no chit it aint cheep. After seeing the one in town here I was concidering it but not at that price. If I get a chance I will snap a pic of the one I saw and post it up.
