Hello Everyone,

Just had a chance to compare the Axys, Doo 850 and Doo 800. The Axys was a 163" x 2.6" track, 850 was a 165" x 3" and Doo 800 was a 163" x 3". There was about 18" of fresh powder with good base. Some areas were harder where the wind had blown most of the fresh off. Let me start by saying I have always been a Polaris guy but have a open mind on what my next sled is going to be. I really like the Axys, but I have several concerns.

1. I cannot stand the Axys running boards!!! I have a size 13 Klim Arctic boot that absolutely doesn't fit for crap on the running boards. It is the same width as the running board without snow built up on it. Once snow is on it, it is a bear to just stay on them. I get that Polaris wants narrow boards for not hanging up in the snow on a side hill. I think the Axys is truly built for smaller framed people. Both Doo boards are much better to stay on the sled.

2. When facing downhill towards a nasty creek bottom, the Axys is much harder to take a hard right or left to get out of trouble. The Doo's are absolute cake to get the sled on its side and to get out of these situations. It almost seems that the Walker Evans front shocks are so stiff that it doesn't allow for the shock to compress in this situation. The Doo's shocks are much softer and I believe this helps the Doo's in this type of scenario.

3. I think the Doo 850 motor pulls stronger through the midrange and top end. The Axys actually feels just as good if not better on the bottom. This Axys motor is no slouch at all, and really is capable of holding its own with the Doo 850. I think the Axys motor is much stronger than the Doo 800. I have heard that the Doo 850 is just as light as an Axys but it isn't! Period!! You can tell that the Axys rides lighter and maybe that makes the motor feel better than it is. The Axys feels taller and narrow while the Doo 850 is lower and wider.

4. The Doo 850 gauge is an absolute JOKE! It is always covered in snow and should have been angled to even try and see it. Polaris did a great job on how their gauge sits.

5. After a couple of hours of continuous riding, we stopped and had lunch. When we did this I opened both the Axys and Doo 850 side panels and felt the clutches. I was amazed that the Axys clutch was barely even warm. The Doo 850 was slightly warmer which surprised me to say the least. The Doo 850 did have some Frogskin vents on the side panels on the clutch side and had the clutch cover "hacked" up. I was expecting the Doo 850 to be smoking hot but it wasn't.

6. On the gas and oil side of things, they were almost dead even. I knew the Axys would do great because of past Axys' I have been around. I was surprised that the Doo 850 basically did just as good as the Axys. We did about a 40 mile round trip with about 3/8 of a tank left in the two sleds.

I have been wanting to stay with Polaris, but I truly can't take the running boards. Let me know if anyone has a better solution for the Axys. Also, why are the Doo's better in those harder snow situations when facing down hill and have to go hard one way or another?

Please don't think I am trying to bash. I truly am giving you my 100% truthful experience with these sleds from yesterday.

Thanks!

Awesome info kingcon and I agree 100% as I have also rode the Axys and Doo 850. I have put a narrower front end on my Axys and a promotion as I had the same problem trying to turn out when going slow down hill. I am going to try a 2" riser now as well and originally I liked the Doo more but after some fine tunning I like the Axys better. I am also not brand loyal my buddy with the Doo also liked the Axys ride after modification as mentioned. Also I have removed the sway bar from the Axys. I do find the Doo gets up on the snow a bit better but that could also be some fine tunning issues. Axys 163x3" and Doo 165x3" 850

Shawert,
Thanks for the insight. I have not thought about putting a narrow front end on it. I know how to ride, and am waiting to get bashed on for "You don't know how to do this or do that" crap. I have rode for over 30 years and would consider myself above average just wanting to know what guys are doing to solve this issue.
Thanks,

Ahhh, cut off your toes?? Size 13! Yup the Doo is better for Sasquaush sized feet for sure. And yes the AXYS has harder suspension and this does make it handle on a knife edge but is more work on hard pack or other conditions. Narrowing the skis does help roll it up but good luck ever taking a rest and do some sit down riding, you have to always then ride it on the high side ski or inside corner. The AXYS is just an aggressive platform, it will do more with the right rider but the older or less experience rider will get ridden.

Cat might be the best of both worlds for you but you might have to get a mullet. Life is a compromise.

Agree with all the comments so far, except I really don't find a narrow sled too much work ever. I do however ride dirt and mountain bikes a lot so maybe that helps?!?
I have my Axys narrowed. It completely transforms it.
Polaris has the dubious distinction of the widest mountain front end by far of any of the manufacturers now.
Set at the narrowest, the factory RMK actual centre to centre is 39.25.
What is the reason for this other than trail manners??
My Zbroz 36 with spindles measures 35.25"
It now handles better in every situation on the hill, and is good enough on the trail if you aren't glued to the seat.
You can buy wider sleds like the assault and freeride if you really want to sit or have trouble on the trail up?!?!

So
I did not like the front of the 850 boards when in the
deep pow , (always full of snow when coming back to the front )
also when working hard the chain case side was always hot
slushy with ice and nowhere to punch it out to,
the back of the boards are sweet and always clean and ready
the taperd in tunnel at the top is nice also

Polaris belt drive keeps temps all around down on the right foot for ice build up
and burant boards seem cleaned out more in front with less kicking
but are thin for sure
Skinz boards are prob still the best tho for shedding ice build up and snow
due to the round factor

I like this, an actual discussion without bashing brands. Doesn't happen very often. I have not had a Doo before other then just standing on one so I can't say a whole lot. They feel very different just to stand on but it always takes time to get used to a new sled anyways. As far as my Axys goes I am loving it. It seems easy to throw over but maybe the Doo is even easier. I was considering narrowing the front end but was worried about handling in the prairies since I am about 50/50 between mountains and prairies. For my size 12 boots the running boards seem a bit narrow I must admit but wow do they grip my boots and that is why I love them. You can be standing on the very edge of the boards and your boots still wont slip off. You don't want to catch your knee on those boards though haha. Been riding with a few Cats and Doos and they always compliment my running boards actually. So far I am loving the sled and it performs well. Great to see a fair comparison though.

I agree the Axys take way more effort on down hill decents and just doesn't have the role the doo does i dont know if its suspension or geometry but the doo dives in and the Axys doesn't. I have an Axys and 800 T3 the XM most deffently still has a fair amount more top end power then tje Axys but the Axys climbs pretty good for how flat the motor is on top. The bottem end of the Axys is great! The boards on the Axys suck B&M favrications has really nice boards for the Axys and it raises the foot loup which is way to low and alot of ppl have got hurt from. When going up hill and through tight trees the axys turbs faster then the doo and i can put it in much tighter spots. Also tue Axys holds an edge for days i could side hill and drink a 7 pack of budweiser

A couple of observations...The Polaris, was it an LE with painted tunnel/boards or were they bare aluminum? Bare aluminum boards pack full of snow quicker than the painted ones. It took Doo a few years to start having all their main stream mountain sleds stock with painted tunnels and boards. Polaris needs to be doing the same.

Comparing the 2.6 track side by side with the 3 inchers isn't really comparing them equally. The final gearing will change how responsive the sled feels.

If you have sold yourself on a new Doo, get a Doo. Its your money. Get what suits you best.

The 850 is so far ahead that it's well worth dealing with the small issues this year. Everyone who upgraded jumped on the 850 and instantly became a better rider. The bottom end on that motor puts mod sleds to shame.

They were all riding XM's. Of course they became better riders
