The thing that pisses me off is once the laws are in, if i'm on the highway and even take a quick drink or anything I can be ticketed the same as some idiot eating drinking all at once in rushhour, regardless if your driving isn't affected. It would sure be nice if people had common sense. I talk on my phone, eat, drink everything while driving, I just know when it's safe to do so and I do one at a time. Can't say i'm worried about a 30 second call when i'm on a dead highway in the middle of the day in the summer....People need to learn to drive!

And come on, NO drinking while driving? God, between calls, eating, and drinking you'll be pulling over every hour atleast. I know I like to drive 6-7 hours without stopping personally.

i dont think pulling over is ANY safer...possibly more dangerous...on the highway anyways

A car pulled over on the side of the highway with it's 4 ways flashing is possibly more dangerous than some dolt doing 100 in a 2 ton hunk of steel while chatting on his cellphone???

How do you figure? Please elaborate.

Oh I see you are from Alberta, where they drive on the paved shoulders to allow others to pass. Is that legal over there or just something you do there that seems Ok? Because here in BC it's illegal to drive over the fogline onto the shoulder unless it's an emerg.

when I'm hauling trailer @ 90 km/h, I pull over onto the paved shoulder to allow faster traffic to pass.... seems the courteous thing to do...don't know about you but I'm not fond of being the douchebag holding up a mile of traffic behind me.... to me THAT is just common courtousy & common sense.

And don't you know the golden rule for pulling a trailer, as long as it's not like a dog wagging it's tail, go faster :d Most trailers are good for 130-140

not with my 454 4-speed..... that 30 km/h (90 to 120) is the difference between 5mpg & 3mpg......

haha REALLY?

in alberta we have full width shoulders because we have the coin and the space. its for safety. emergency vehicles use it and civilians use it when they are moving slower than the designated speed.

AND YES i feel a vehicle pulled over with its hazards on is far more dangerous. for the person in the vehicle and the person moving.

#1- you are pulled over being safe. what about the girl coming right at you doing her makeup? on the phone?

#2- chit happens. when a vehicle is pulled over with 2 lanes of traffic moving beside it and one driver reacts to an animal or some other obstruction the other driver may swirve into the parked vehicle

#3 - not everyone pays attention. someone could look down for one second and have there engine parked in your cupholder within seconds.

#4 - it obstructs traffic. when ever someone including myself sees a vehicle pulled over they automatically SLOW DOWN...this is an automatic danger on the highway. why>? because people dont know if the person is going to get out of the vehicle or his kid is going to swing the door right open...would hate to be that guy!

#5 - merging..i dont know but i have come accross maybe 3 or 4 people in alberta that actually know how to merge? someone pulling in off the shoulder in front of a fully loaded faster moving vehicle is not uncommon because they are unable to judge the speed of the vehicle behind them. this AGAIN causes traffic to slow and others to become uneasy in other lanes and beside.

#6 - oncoming traffic....i have been talking about divided highways before this. what happens in a single lane when something unexpected happens from the vehicle on the shoulder and the approaching vehicle is forced into oncoming traffic where THAT driver may or may not be paying attention

#7 - oversized loads....in ALBERTA we transport some VERY large items. and the drivers are not very forgivving as they dont have the room or manueverability to be. wouldnt that suck to get tagged with a house moving down the highway?

so yes. as a redneck big truck driving ahole albertan i feel me and others can be on their phone and attempt to keep their vehicle between the lines more safely than pulling over. these are just how i feel and i may be completely wrong. i spend alot of my time on the highway and have seen it all. including bodys being covered up from other incidents that had nothing to do with cell phones. overtired?

Redline wouldn't hit till like 175 or so. Running at about 3000. Got 3.73s with the nv5600, that was with stock tires to. With 38's it would hit 200 easy but won't be finding out anytime soon :p

This is how it states according to the Government of Alberta Ministry of Transportation:

Just as I suspected Junky, thanks for answering my question.

So Maxwell, the only real reason it could possibly be more dangerous to pull over to talk on your cellphone is because some drivers seem to think it's ok to drive on the shoulder of a highway. If they do so and are not driving with their eyes open they are likely to rearend some poor law abiding driver doing the right thing. In Alberta as it is in BC, it is illegal to travel on the paved shoulder portion of a highway. Does not paying attention sound about right as well as not keeping your vehicle in between the lines?
As well, it is the responsibility of the person who is pulling over to use their cellphone to pull over only where it is safe to do so. Pure common sense.

I have no problem with that Bogger, but you are not legally permitted to drive along at 90 on the shoulder while allowing people to pass you. You are supposed to pull over and stop when and where it is safe to do so. Thats why when you drive like that in BC and people behind you don't pass you, it's because it's illegal for a reason, cause it's dangerous.:d

I've been broke down on hwy 2;big freeway with lots of room.Do you think people can be bothered to move to the left lane or even slow down when they go by???I was scared for my life!!!My orange triangles which were off the fog line on the shoulder side by about 6 inches were run over and smashed after about 5 minutes!

That is why I hate when people pull over for no reason. I always try to hit the left lane or slow down a bit, or at the very least hug the left side to give people pulled over lots of room. I wouldn't like it either, everyone drives fast and to many who can't drive.

And passing on the shoulder, I will never do it either or pass people pulled out onto the shoulder. And you won't pass me on the shoulder either, if someone tries I will pull right in front of them, it is dangerous.

If your only going 90, it takes nothing to pass you. If i'm unloaded on a 2 lane, I never spend more then about 2 minutes behind a vehicle it's SO easy to pass when you got power :d
