Got one quote back from London life 2.50/$1000 coverage. Cheapest so far. This is on top of the normal rate I was quoted without snowmobiles.

These are anonymous quotes. They don't know who I am other than I ride snowmobiles in the mountains and that I'm AST 1 certified and travel with other AST 1 certified people and ride with all the safety equipment.

I'm finding it very interesting what the insurance world thinks of snowmobilers.

I also A Padi certified diver. They didn't give two hoots about that.

I made a phone call into Co-operators today. They may shed a glimmer of light. I asked the agent to ask his underwriter what there policy is on backcountry riding. I know Youngpolarisguy said he had a policy with them and they were fine with it but I don't want to leave anything to chance.

Mine with sunlife didn't come about till they asked me about atving. Said yes then it opened up a whole different chapter. I don't mind though. At least I have some peace of mind for the family. As long as they come through if something happened

Yes Sunlife likes lots of questions which is good, however it expensive to have coverage for the backcountry.

Shouldn't backcountry skiiers and snowboarders be treated the same as sledders? They're exposing themselves to avy danger as well. I've never understood the rationale of insurance companies, I'm pretty sure they get their "facts" by whats on the front page news. In their eyes we're all a bunch of drunk, redneck morons that highmark everything from a ditch to a mountain:confused:

Does anyone know if you didn't snowmobile when you got life insurance, and you now do, do you have to "update" them to your new activities? I got life insurance when I bought my house but didn't snowmobile or do half the things I do now at that time....I've never updated them to my new hobbies.

Skiers and snowboarders are treated the same. The forms I filled out asked what type of snow sport I participated in.

It will be in a clause stating what they will and won't insure you for. Just be cause you have life insurance does not mean the would cover you for say ski diving or snowmobiling. If it's a concern I would ask them. I would say yes you would need to tell them if you picked it up at a later date.

So got an answer from Co-operators. They asked if I highmarked and I said no. They said no problem so I'm thinking great. So I then asked what other parts of backcountry snowmobiling they were concerned with and they couldn't give me an answer. I asked what if I was traveling the same degree of slope going to a different area as say somebody highmarking. Is that any different. Again they couldn't answer. I said I want to make sure that I fully disclose everything I do out there and gave them a short write up of the places I ride. How I ride. What I carry for gear. Who I ride with. And what mind set these people are like which is of the same as me. Basically it would be no different then most of us average riders out there. I tend to ride with caution out there.

They came back at $3/$1000.

Insurance companies are clueless to what is actually going on in the backcountry. Again media is playing a part here I think.

Actually sledders are playing the part here.... Most problems in the hills are caused by poor decisions. If there weren't most of these totally preventable deaths, and many multiple deaths, this wouldn't have hardly been in the media... Just how I see it. We brought it upon ourselves.... Or at least a few poor decisions brought it upon ourselves

I disagree, people make bad decisions everyday and lives are lost. Nobody talked about it and it went away. Statistics show the amount of deaths each year in snowmobiling and it's not that high in comparison to the amount of people using the backcountry. However no stats show the amount of people using. This combined with the media finding an avalanche causing death great news causes people to think otherwise. I think if you compared the amounts they pay out yearly from car accidents in comparison to the amount of potential payouts in snowmobile related deaths period whether in the backcountry or not, would be lower.
