BC school system was horrible, my daughter came to live with my wife and I, when she was 16, as she wanted to get a better education in Alberta. The problem was her marks were so inflated from the BC system that she really struggled to get any good grades here. She gradutated here(barely)but headed back to BC right after. She is not dumb but I was amazed at the basic mistakes in grammer, spelling and punctuation in her work. Having said that, it isn't just BC any more, it is everywhere. True, no one likes to see the red pen come out, but to me anyway, I would try harder next time. Now for the most part, kids can just glide through and get passed anyway. Society is going to hell in a handcart and bleeding heart "let's make everyone feel good about being a f$#kup" is guiding us there. The cream is not rising to the top, it is being drowned by apathy and sloth.

I graduated back in 88 at 17 with the old system!Scared shi..ess of going to the office to get the strap, getting a 0 or a F if you didn't do the work, one teacher that would rap your knuckles with a yard stick or throw a chalk brush at you if you screwed around in his class and was told by the parents if I got in trouble at school I would get it worse at home!I learned to respect adults and people of athority because of it.My spelling wasn't the best and I never took a computer or typing class in school and it shows!!LOL!!My kids are horrified when I talk about the old days then they tell me about the discipline the teachers are forced to hand out now a days! What a joke!I sat in some of their classes and some of those little bastards already know that they can play the system with no consequences!I never had to give my kids beatings but some of those kids need one!Sad part is that teacher's career is probably over because he tried teaching those kids a life lesson!

Biatching on snow and mud is fine, but unless you let the people who can make a difference know, nothing will happen. If everyone called, a voice would begin to be heard. They work for us. Let's not let them forget.

They need to go to the school of Hard Knocks for a few years...............Work ethics these days just blow me away for the young people . No one takes pride in what they do they just whine about everything. I think it's mostly a result of education and what's expected of them and they have no accountability anymore.

I think allot of this has to do with the bleeding heart parents and "my kid wouldn't do that" or "my kid is smarter then that" attitude. I think that the responsibility lays on the parents to teach their children proper work ethic whether it be towards school or other.

If you let ur kid stay inside all day on the xbox while you the parent slave away in the kitchen, yard, house then they are going to have a poor work ethic and think everything should be handed to them. That's including their school grades. If your child is not handing homework in and receiving zeros for unfinished assignments then so be it. I think some of the parents need a kick in the ass. Chit rolls downhill. When my step kids come home with report cards we sit down and go over them and u better believe its not the teacher catching chit if there are incomplete assignments. However we do call the teacher to ask if the assignments were completed now would it boost their mark. Sometimes yes sometimes no.

I would HATE being a teacher in todays world. Kudos to those that are!

and that is why we have the problems we have today. I was scared to act up in school because of the consequences. I believe that they should bring back the strap to school and the rope to the justice system.

Amen brotha!

I agree that for a lot us that grew up with the threat of the strap was a great deterent, I had it once in Primary by a beyotch of a teacher who didn't have a clue that I had gone deaf due to an illness. Having said that, I know that ever since the threat of the strap was removed, anarchy started to prevail and the teachers have zero power. Parents refuse to instill in their children( and this is a very broad brush) any sense of responsibility and as a result chaos. You wonder why there are so many private schools? I wish I could have sent my boy to one but it was rather out of reach at the time. It would have saved some grief( ok it is my pipe dream so pee off) not really liking where we are headed.

N American kids will continue to play xbox while collecting welfare while the hard working labor force from the Phillipines supports them.

And complain that the immigrants took their jobs!

and all the manufacturing has moved to Mexico because they still have a work ethic. I said it before and I'll say it again, "I'm glad I was able to retire when I did as the last 12 years would have been a beotch and I'd be another dude that was suspended!

"have 2 people in the family that are teachers the school board told them they are not to mark tests with o or use red ink because red ink might upset the kids"....

...And i guess when they get older and get pulled over for a driving infraction we shouldn't use the Red and Blue lights cause they might get upset or better still someone might recognize them>>>>>>

And the Schoolboard PR spokesperson boldly stood there and said "we should mark the kids on what they know, not what they don't".....

How does one mark them on what they know if they fail to do or turn in the work???????????

the average teacher only works around 125 days a year and makes over 50 grand a year and they plan on going on strike this fall if they don't get a raise 50,000-125=400-8hours=50.00 an hour and you get 2 months off

we can complain all day long about the school system but, we have ourselves to blame for allowing the system to be implemented including myself as I have never heard of such a idiotic policy. Not sure if the same system is in place here in BC but, one thing that will be added to my itinerary tomorrow is to find out if it is. If so, I will be writing to my MLA then use the new age technology by putting it on Facebook where my friends can see what a retarded system we have.

You want to deal with 30 kids for anything less? Didn't think so.

The kids are our future, it's worth a couple of bucks to give them the best education we can, however, not alowing zeros will do more harm than good.
