Taking kids on rides

My kids when they were young....yes. Someone else's kids then or now.....not a chance! On my quad anyway. If I ever get a SxS, well.....we'll see.

So not many are willing to take someone else's kids on trail ride's, Guess i don't need to feel like an ogre for saying no

Nope, took my nephew once in the Edson rally, had no problems, he had all the gear on. But I don't double anymore, not even the dog. Sister in law whined once that we never take them quadding, I told her you get a quad and truck and a tent we will take you. Never heard another peep from them.

Don't feel bad about not doubling.

I have said this before, and I will say it again, I firmly believe that any child should learn how to ride a 50cc dirt bike before they are ever put on any ATV solo, the dirt bike teaches them control, how to watch where they are driving, and proper brake usage.

It scares me to see some young kid riding a quad and looking behind, or at the clouds when moving forwards...quads kids/adult have hurt so many unaware children...teach bikes first, full gear on the little guys, and at least when they fall injury's are rare.

I don't have kids of my own but I don't think any kid should be let on the side line, I will take friends kids, brothers out under the premise of gear is required and I make the rules, I used to have some kids gear just in case someone was short of it, teach them proper habits at young age.

I don't double, everyone has their own ride, if they have to take turns so be it !!!

Biggest thing for a kid to learn on a bike is balance to clode

This not about teaching kids to ride,rather about the parents of kids asking you to let their kids ride along in your machine,(mostly sxs).
The point is a lot of the sxs owners do not want the responsibility of caring for kids on the trail.......Many things can happen along on the rides...........there are roll overs,sticks coming every direction,steep hills,collisions, etc etc..........

Of course there are times when people get hurt,so i think most sxs (quads too) owners just do not want the worry and stress that can happen with young ones along for a ride..............

I would give kids rides, but nothing more then a 5 mph romp around the campsite, as DaveB indicated, Even have issues with giving Adults a ride, if something does happen, whom is to blame, and whom gets sued ? ..... how far do you go, get them to sign a waiver ?..... do think it is best to leave that passenger seat empty

they sure tightened up the laws in California regarding children in UTV's, it's against the law for them to ride in a side by side if they can't have their feet on the floor and reach any grab bars or passenger handles while seat belted in. they also outlawed aftermarket 4 seat kits, if the machine didn't come with 4 seats you cannot legally carry more people than the machine was designed for and helmets are mandatory.

as for my own kids, they've had their own machines as soon as they could walk. started out with an electric quad they both rode the chit out of, then bought them a kids gas powered quad they both rode, then the youngest got a honda 50 and is now on a honda 70. the oldest boy has now claimed the 400 outlander as his own. as for them riding with others, it's about who I trust, my youngest rode with many numbers wife in Grande Cache and I had no problem letting him do so. if there was an accident, I know it wouldn't have been anything Aud had done and would never consider a lawsuit should something have happened.

when I was a kid I was obsessed with motor toys, I rode in front of my pop on his harleys, on his snowmobiles (with the open carb that I was positive was gonna suck me right into the motor) and even with the neighbors kid on his XL 250. I'm a sucker for a little kid that wants to go for a ride, with his parents blessing of course, and absolutely no horsing around.

Ok one thing I have to say, when I was young we road double all the time on 185 trikes ect.... Now that's unsafe, but that was the norm and sure there was accidents


Now with the amount on quads ect and how big they are ect, and people riding them with lack of experience

But what's this world coming to on everything nowadays....

Nothing is good, nothing is safe, don't do this, bla bla bla

Pretty soon u will have to wear a helmet on a boat.... Or driving a car

Looks like a lot of people agree the answer is No unless they are over 18.

Have a 6 seater SXS. Bought it to be able to keep my daughter in a car seat in back seat center with nets up safely, keeps the branches and such away much better. We trail ride grown in areas alot so sticks/branches are always a concern. Often it is requested we pack others but for various reasons it not my preference.
1: This puts my angel sitting beside the edge of the side by side getting more acceptable to branches and widow makers.
2: Puts the visitor into same danger level and me into potential hot water or regret.
3: Puts a degree of stress on my day when I am out there to get away from stress. Now Im watching every branch like a hawk as we pass it and looking back to see if they got whipped.
4: Driving a large 6 seater SxS is enough chore following around qauds through tight bush. Unit is already 1500lbs, so why not add additional weight! (believe me in muskeg it make a difference and adds alot of extra stress on the unit)
My daughter enjoys some company back there though, but on big remote rides no thanks. Close to home for a local ride on good ground lets load up and go enjoy a ride young and old!

I hope you are not suggesting that statistically, driving in a car on a road is as dangerous as driving an OHV in the off road. Your car also carries insurance that protects you and your passengers....

I guess its gambling. I will take Pecos' kids in my motorhome or truck on occasion when we get together....I figure the odds of a bad wreck might be 1:1,000,000. I will not take his kids on a quad ride...I'm guessing the odds of an injury-causing wreck would probably be closer to 1:100.
