Switching to synthetic in older quad

Have a older 1991 Yamaha Moto4 250 that I have been using reg 10-40 oil in it. Now with a newer Sportsman the Yamaha will get maybe 200kms a year. Thinking of putting synthetic in as I probably won't be changing the oil to often and it does get the occasional winter ride. Question is would there be any reason not to put synthetic in or anything to be careful about with oil types (Motorcycle vs automotive oil)? Quad has never had any issues and doesn't burn oil at all.

I always heard synthetic oils were hard on clutch plates.. more slippage???

The moto 4 is a manual so no clutch plates. Depending on how many miles you have on it,. with synthetic it will clean up the engine a bit and you might end up with top end oil burning.

No clutch plates???? Must be hard to stop when its running then.. having to always shut it off...... LOL...

To answere the question, use atv syn oil, the syn atv oils r always JASO approved. Thats the classification ur looking for.
Ipone,Motul,Amsoil r sum good names

I think what u mean is "there's no pri and sec"
Think about a 5speed car, is there a clutch plate? What about a 5 speed quad? Or MX bike.?

My bad I should have stated POWERSPORTS synthetic as it is clutch compatible, non energy conserving and JASO certified.

DO Not use Automotive Synthetic Oil , they have a additive that will make the clutch slip.

and the Moto-4 is a Manual Shift Automatic.... it does have discs. I have had 10 of those in last 20 yrs.Great quads.but the newer Kodiaks & Grizzleys are better.Those we can use Automotive oils in !

What about the cetrifugal in grizz', still has clutch material that may be softened or eaten by automotive eng oil.
You wouldnt put rotella t 15w40 in ur car would ya and vice versa.
Stick to the oils that r engineered for the atv application. That is ur safest bet.:d
