Superclamps question? Legal/Illegal??

I am in no way Knocking super clamps, i still have them on my deck and in my enclose they are great products with unbelievable support from the owner, i would recommend them to anyone..

I discussed this at length with Randal last year by phone, and then took my deck to the scales at Dunmore (just outside of the Hat) and had them inspect as well. They told me the whole '4 point' tie down rule that some many guys talk about is more related to tractors, backhoes, graders and such...basically heavy equipment. They told me that the superclamps over the skis were considered adequate and 'legal', and for me I use a ratchet strap on the back, only one across the top of the track, this again they deemed adequate.

As far as 'legal' the DOT boys tell me there are no written or otherwise rules to follow for sleds, but they have to be 'adequately' tied down in such a way that an officer would look at it and feel confident that they would do the job. No question on the clamps. The scary part is that they outright admitted that it truly is up to the discretion of the officer doing the inspection, so what works for one, another may ask you to do more. The superclamp exceeded their expectation as far as load rating and effectivness as a tie-down. I will continue to use them, but will add rear clamps on the deck this year.

I believe in Superclamps, always have, always will. I don't, however think you will care for the rear clamp on a deck, as they tend to come loose because you have to mount them so close to the front of the rail. They work awesome on or in a trailer where you can mount them at the back of the sled. Fot the deck, I think I would stick to using a strap over the track. Just my 2 cents.

Well, I am trying something new this year, I bought the extension for the deck, so I was hoping to get the clamp far enough back to make it work better (or at all) but if not I will stick to the straps for sure.

Ya, with the extension, you may be alright. The rear clamps aren't that expensive, so if it doesn't work for you, you're not out a whole bunch.

No, and I needed them for the enclosed anyway, so no loss either way. I never tied the rears in the enclosed last year, but definitely got some movement.

They will wiggle around a bit in a trailer. I found they tend to stay still on a deck though, the suspension of the truck is a little tamer than that of the trailer.

I drove transport with a 53 foot stepdeck through both countries for 10 years. BC was the worst for DOT problems. With my sled, I use 4 Kinedyne Steadymate straps which are legal everywhere.

Superclamps Are 100% Legal
In regards to the question, “Are Superclamps Legal or Illegal?” I wanted to know myself.
I picked up the phone and called Randall from Superclamp. According to the DOT regulations and requirements - SUPERCLAMPS are 100% Legal. Here is the exact passage from the latest publication of the Traffic Safety Act:



Transporting goods

65 (1) A person shall not use a vehicle to transport goods unless

(a) the vehicle is constructed to carry the goods, and

(b) there is equipment on the vehicle or attached to the vehicle that is capable of securing the goods to ensure that the vehicle can be operated safely when loaded and without danger of

(i) turning over the vehicle, or

(ii) the load shifting, swaying, blowing off, falling off, leaking or otherwise escaping

(2) A person shall not operate a vehicle that is transporting goods unless the equipment referred to in subsection (1)(b) is properly used to secure the goods.

(3) The equipment referred to in subsection (1)(b) may be permanently attached to the vehicle or temporarily attached to the vehicle for the purpose of transporting a particular load of goods.

I made some by using a 3/8" chain link turned sideways and welded a 5/8" bolt onto the long side of the chain link. put them on my open 2 place, sled deck, and inside the enclosed. works good....superclamps are the only way to go for sure.

If you bought them new, they should have come with an anchor in each box. If they didn't, you got the "shaft".

I have not looked inside but the guy said the mounts are extra! so I asume that they are not in there! nice sales gimmic!

lol....easy Dave, I don't think he was complaining yet....just said the guy that sold them to him claimed the mounts were extra.
