Curious to know what some of the strange, cool, and/or bizarre things that while riding out in the wilderness throughout Alberta that you all have seen?

For me it was riding through some dense crown land NE of Edmonton where we came out of an old creek bed and came across a herd of about 40 muley deer who just scattered in all directions forcing us to stop for fear of being stampeded.

Also have seen plenty of carcasses in various states of being something's lunch, along with a couple of strange tree snaps at approx 12 feet high which caused me to wonder how the heck that happened?

Yours?

DZL... great post topic!

Once, while I was racing my brother on our Firecats at 1:00 am in the morning flying down a narrow hard packed cutline by Calling Lake AB, I hit a Hare (rabbit) at over 100 miles per hour with my right spindle. The poor sucker bolted out of the spruce trees and that was it for the poor little guy... all I saw was a quik white flash and poooof! We turned around to see the after math and all that there was left was fur, a few rabbit pieces and some steaming innerds. We felt bad but chalked it up as suicide... it made us feel better at the time. :(:(:(:violin:

My dad and I had the same experience as you Dzl. We were tearin across an alfalfa field around dusk a couple winters ago and come over this hill right into the middle of a herd of deer. Dad caught one with a ski and sent it bouncing off the side of the sled and almost wiping him off it. Luckily he wasn't hurt but sure he had to throw them underwear away once we got home.
Another funny incident last winter when a buddy ran himself over w/ his own sled. The snow was soft and deep and he was having fun leaning back and on the throttle catwalking down a small hill. Well he must have scared himself and let off the throttle and front of his renegade did the submarine dive and over the bars he went. Front ski ran over him pushing him down into the soft snow and the rest of us had a really good laugh at his expense. He was a little soar but not hurt. At the end of the poker rally a couple stiff shots of whiskey helped sooth his aces and pride.

In my head
Riding the Sturgeon River one year there were spots where the water was bubbling up out of the ice. It created that yellow faom which was freezing as it came it out. Started acculumulating and building higher and higher like a termite mound. Looked funny as all heck.

Riding Swan Hills last winter, from a distance could see two animals on trail. looked like Coyotes. Went into a small gulley and as we came back up and over there were two wolves right in front of us. I mean like within a few feet! One poked into the bush, other decided to start running down trail and cut off onto another cutline. That was really cool. We saw their tracks all along the snowmobile trail and found a well eaten moose kill. Snow was deep last year and they were using some of the trails to get around.

Same area couple years ago. Trail did a switchback around a small stand of trees. In the trees was a moose. As my riding partner came around the trees the moose decided to cut across the trail as well. Just about stepped right over him! Good thing we had to slow down to take that swithback. We stopped and he changed his diaper.

There's a small spot on the N Sask River south of Smoky Lake where the water never freezes because it runs over some small rapids. Luckily the water there is very shallow and the guys I ride with are very experienced on that section of river as they've run it for a lot of years with the sleds in the winter and jet boats in the summer. First time I saw it, the sphincter pucker gauge pinned.

Sledding at Hudson Bay Sasks came across 2 teams of dog sleds on the trail, not the first time they met a sled, they headed right for the bush:eek: I have pictures I will have to try and track them down to post.

A couple years back we saw a herd of Cariboo at Allen Creek in Valemount. Our sleds were havin trouble with the fresh powder, and they just walk along as if they were walking down a road. Really cool to see.

While riding at Candle Lake Sask last year, in a huge snow storm we came across a black bear out of hybernation. He was just sitting on the side of the hiway while people stoped and took some photos. He was so groggy I could have ran up and smacked him on the ass. However I was'nt about to test that theory.

a few years back a group of us were sledding on a creek north of here, we had stopped for a sammich and someone said "hey...look at that!" it was a 747 escorted by 2 US fighter jets flying at crazy low altitude, heading south. musta been someone important.
