As of sept 20th BC will have the stiffest penalties in canada for people caught excessive speeding or driving while under the influence. Excessive speeding is doiung 40km/h over the posted speed limit, first offence is a 900.00 ticket, vehicle impounded for a week and if insured in BC an extra 320.00/year on your insurance for 3 years. The third offence it's a 8000.00 ticket and vehicle impounded for 60 days and extra 420.00/year for 3 years. The fifth offence it's a 24,000.00 fine.

Driving under the influence, if you blow .005 no more 24hr, it's a automatic 3day driving suspension, if you blow .008 then you lose your license for 60 days automaticlly and still face the dui charges in court.

I really dont like how the police officer can hand things out like that, at .05. What happened to due process? Seems like yet another cash grab to me.

IMO.... the penelties can't get tough enough!! If you've been drinking and you get behind the wheel you know you are at risk for this fine... not to mention everyone else that is on the road is also at risk. Personally, I don't want you hitting my kid and killing him!! :nono:

agree 100% should zero tolerance on dui rules. i bet everyones opinion would change if they where directly afffected by this ina nay other way than jut losing ones license. maybe lose a loved one from a drunk driver and opinions would change.

In the past they could hand out a 24hr suspension, now it just that they are handing out a 3 day suspension instead. The way i look at it is if it keeps more people off the road that have been drinkin then good. I dont want to pay more money to govt just like anyone else. But on the same token i dont think that anyone should have the right to be on the road half pissed either as they are then endangering others lives not just there own. One thing that seems to be forgotten over time is the fact that being able to drive is more of a priviledge than a right. I obey the law and dont drive if had more than two beer with dinner myself so it doesn't affect me. The hope is that it might make the roads a little saafer for all.

It wouldn't suprise me really when a guy sees how much of that goes on around here and how many vehicles end up gettin impounded here.

In my head
I'm all for it!!

It's not a cash grab if you don't break the laws.

One can only hope though that it really does save lives.

Maybe the extra cash from those that do break the laws will go back to education programs or more enforcement.

those 2 beers with dinner will most likely put you over the .05 if you were to be pulled over shortly after having comsumed them, say within an hour

And THAT is what bugs me. I do not advocate drunk driving, as my oringinal post may lead some to believe, but I feel that having a drink or two with dinner should not be punished with a 3 day suspension. Is the law .05 or .08? Pick one, and roll with it.

My thoughts are, .08 is an acceptable range, lets make the punishments for being over that number more severe, not take down people who like a glass of wine with their steak.

this i whole heartedly agree with!!!!!! pick a number and go with it! if they want to make .05 the legal limit, fine! but as it stand the limit is .08, so why should i face ANY consequences for being at .05????????? it's like the legal age for drinking being higher than the legal age for voting, makes no sense!

after 2 hrs the alcohol has had a better chance to metabolise, but what if you blew say 1 hr later, bet you'd be awfully close if not over that .05

When i go out for dinner it always take atleast 1.5hr or more. And you know what if for some reason i did blow .05 and got a 3 day susp then so be it. The law is if you blow .08 you get an impaired and in the past if you blew around the .05 mark they'd just take your liscense away for 24hrs, where as now they are just makin it so hopefully more people will be more responsible. I enjoy a beer with my dinner as much as the next guy dont me wrong.

see, that's what pizzes me off! is the limit .08 or .05?????? cause at .05, i'm not legally drunk, and they can kiss my azz!!!!!! my lawyer buddies have stated many times that if someone were to challenge this it probably wouldn't stand in court very well. but with it usually being a 24 hr nobody has really cared enough to challenge, but i bet that will change with a 3 day suspension

Thing is, who is going to spend the money on a lawyer, and take the time from life to do it? Here's to hoping a lawyer get busted on tuesday and rips it down.

Over .08 should be treated severly, that line that has been drawn all over for many years. A couple of beers or glasses of wine with dinner out should not be punishable to this extent. BC is becoming a police state where everybody will live under the thumb of Big Brother and the thumb is pressing harder and harder. The 40k over speeding laws are redundant to the laws already in place such as dangerous driving etc. how many laws do you need for the same thing? There are new laws being enacted everyday in Alberta too, what worries me is that with every new law enacted an old law gets ignored, the cops can only handle so much workload and we aren't adding very well to there ranks. They in effect concentrate on the laws they think are easily enforcable and which will get the best/easiest chance of conviction and ignore the laws that they might have to work at. I don't blame them they have a tough enough job and this is why when your sled gets stolen they have a hard time caring, they are to busy with the BS crap handed to them daily.

i agree, the point .08 line should never be crossed! if they want to make that line .05, then so be it, i'm fine with that too! just don't go te3lling me .08 is the limit, but then changing their minds just casue they want too!!!! and like has been said, make the punishment much more severe for over .08, then people would think twice about it and you probably wouldn't have many even getting to the .05, just to be safe!
