When you pull starter cover off DO NOT MESS WITH THE SPRING a helping hand is helpful wind the pulley counterclockwise 8-9 turn have someone push the rope threw the hole with a knot tye in it I use a vise grip to hold the loose end and gently release it i hope this helps

youtube it might help a little with what your up against just did this on my sled last week it was a learning process. What ever you do dont let that spring out is a batch to get back in. took me 2 beers! and yeah wind 8-10 times counterclock and a loose knot in the open end is good so you dont have to do it more!

I hate working on recoils, it can go smoothe as butter or make ya curse for hours. I currently am not looking forward to fixing the recoil on my vintage sled, 73 Polaris with a CABLE for a rope.really hope nothin is broke inide I dont feel like searching for old parts.
