What a day, heading into Edmonton to pick up some stuff with my older tandem axle sled trailer. I hit the railway tracks on the Wye road and my trailer came of the ball and then both of my chains broke and the trailer headed down a steep ditch; the fence stopped it. Thank Goodness it did not go in the oncoming lane.

Came back about three hours later and the trailer is gone, phoned RCMP and they did not tow it out of the ditch. The trailer is an older aluminum tandem axle trailer with a aluminum front sled protector and has a black hitch. It is 16' and the deck is a combination of wood and aluminum; maybe worth $1000.00.

A couple of points here, to the SOB that decided to take it, you are very lucky I did not return while you were pulling it out of the ditch. It truly was your lucky day!

And the Wye road is a single lane busy road and traffic would have had to be stopped. Doesn't anyone ask questions anymore? Is it really that easy to steal something today?

Frick, the more I deal with people the more I like my dog......

I'm missing something here.:confused::confused: Why wouldn't have you pulled out of the ditch after discovering it when AWOL?:confused: Did you have the safety pin in the hitch? Where you using the right sized ball? Both safety chains broke? Sounds to me like you may have to step back and re-evaluate your pretrip walk around. :(

Hey Pipes,

Did the pre-trip, everything looked good. Very rough railway track. Had to leave to get some chains to pull the trailer out of the ditch.

Like I said the trailer has not been used in a couple of years, should of sold it when I bought the enclosed.

Still does allow some low life chithead to pull it out of the ditch.....

sorry didn't mean to come off as the hard nose. just a lot of stars seemed to line up and point the finger at you. Had to ask the question though. I had a trailer come off the ball too. my buddy did the hook up and I assumed that he did everything correctly. Turned out that he didn't put in the safety pin. Who do I blame? myself for not checking. ever since that episode I and only I do the final check to the hook up.

I had a similar incident, a buddy hooked my truck up to the boat trailer while I drove the boat over to the launch....getting dark and after I got it on the trailer and told him to go ahead, the hitch came off the ball and broke one safety chain when the slack tightened up. was a shitty feeling sitting in the boat, on the trailer, and everything rolling backward into the lake....he didn't have the ball fully inside the hitch when he hooked it up. good thing the other safety chain held....trust no one....lol

I make a point to look at the thing that touches the ball and make sure it is on there. And then pull on the tongue up and down a couple times.and then check it once more.Scary chit when you think of what could happen if it goes into traffic

sounds like the safety chains were totally inadequate for the trailer, could have been a disaster if the trailer had been loaded, and then come off. maybe a good thing it's gone in a way ?
can't seem to trust anyone these days, always someone looking to steal something.

going to have to check safety chains on the trailers from here on. usually out of site out of mind. just a thought, maybe put a sign up with info were the trailer was, maybe someone saw something.

sounds like there were several contributing factors to this incident, worn out hitch/ball, poor condition of safety chains, and driver error hitting the rough tracks too fast. the icing on the cake was someone helping themselves to an aluminum trailer to add on to the misfortune of the owner.

Well I think you should never ask the wife to hook up the horse trailer, we start going down the road to pick up horses and 8/9 blocks later off comes the trailer and it followed truck because of safety chains thank god. So I get out and the whole hitch is still attached to the trailer, so I looked if she might of forgot to put pin in and the pin was in. She just never puched the hitch in far enough to line up holes. She is not allowed to touch trailers again...

check once for the left side, check twice for the right side, check three times for the tailgate and stop once for a walk around! if that all fails say it was stolen anyways!!!

It's as much your fault as hers if you didn't check.
