if I can save just one person with the agonizing illness caused by the chicken pox virus pls take my advice and go get your shot for chicken pox if you haven't already. I just got out of the hospital after 8 days dealing with Ramsay Hunt syndrome which is caused by this nasty virus. No pain medicine is strong enough to deal with it and now I am on a regiment of steroids. I have been dealing with this for 6 years now and no cure. Extremely painfully as this particular strain hits the central nervous system in the face. Other illnesses from the chicken pox are bells palsy, shingles to name a few. Trust me this will save you a lot of grief. Cheers!

Brutal... Hope you get better! How does this shot work if you've already had chicken pox? Is it similar to the shingles vaccine talked about - or do you need to get a separate shot for each illness in this case?

if you have had full blown chicken pox (usually at your early years) then chances of getting it is dramatically low. However, if you have not had a full blown case or very slightly which was my case as I only had a few spots at the age of 3 then your chances will dramatically increase. So, for the later I would go and get the shingles vaccine. It will save you a lot of pain and discomfort not to mention money if your self employed like myself.

hey everyone, just a reminder that if you didn't take my advice and get the shingles virus shot pls do yourselves a favour and GET IT!!! A close friend of mine did not take my advice and now he has been in the hospital in substantial pain. This will be a long road for him now and he kicks himself for not doing so. It only takes a simple appointment with your doc. Wish there was a shot before I was diagnosed.

apparently when I was 3 I got the chickpox but very lightly. According to UBC doctors whom I am under the care of told me that essentially when you get the full blown chickpox you are essentially killing the virus (in most cases). However, if you barely had them or nothing at all you are exposed at any age but particularly after 40. As mentioned above, the virus can show its ugly face in many forms with shingles being the most common form. As usual I get the rare form of Ramsey Hunt which hits the central nervous system in the face and no cure. I deal with it more or less daily with severe flare ups every couples months ending up in the hospital.

And, you can't get the vaccine now? It's just useless? That SUCKS! Good to know tho, and thanks for the heads up.

unfortunately the vaccine is useless once you get the virus flare up. It is purely preventative hence the reason I posted this to save even one person the grief.

I forgot to mention that with bells palsy or Ramsey Hunt you have a good chance of facial paralysis as well. I was fortunate that the doc diagnosed me pretty quickly and put me on steroids right away thru intervenes and avoid it.

surprised he is willing to wait despite the age. My doctor has even told me that I should "spread the word" to avoid this because they are seeing a large number of cases with shingles despite there being a vaccine for it.

was mild.....we asked about the shingles vaccine and the dr. recommended not yet, if it persists then yes but typically the vaccine is for those over 50 years old.

Not funny at all. My friends wife had it on her face too and infected her eye. She was only 38 when first diagnosed and the Dr missed it largely due to the fact of being a female and because it was on her head. She has permanent scars and was lucky it didn't lead to paralysis yet. I feel for anyone who goes through it and wish you the best. Thanks for spreading the word.

just another friendly reminder that if you haven't gone to the doctor for the shingles virus pls do so to avoid years of grief! Just got back from Winnipeg for brain surgery all caused by this terrible illness. I now have a loonie and half size hole drilled into my scull and still no guarantees it will help. Very intrusive and painful surgery. 4 hrs on the operating table and 1/2 day under anaesthetic and 5 days in the hospital. Needless to say no more sledding for me this spring :( Anyway, pls look into it if you did not have a strong case of the chicken pox as a youngster!
