Just out of curiosity, I checked statistics. There were 17,250 murders in the US last year so about double in Mexico. Love Mexico but am as cautious there as I am when in the US. Like the US, you are more likely to get hurt as a bystander in some areas more than others and you need to be smart regardless of where you are including Canada.

When on the Mayan side I stay at a resort where there is no reason to leave so very comfortable with the level of safety. Wound up in a resort outside of PV this year and pretty much the same thing. Planning to go to Hualtuco before Christmas this winter..

I don’t get the fear mongering , admittedly there has been trouble In Mexico but by the same token I guess you guys can’t go to Vancouver, Calgary , Edmonton , Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal And for that matter even Kelowna. Myself and my wife travel to Mexico regularly and we are here now. Not once have we felt threatened, If you are going to hang out in nightclubs til 3 am it may be a different story.

Never been to mexico, no desire to either, i would say i hear 50/50 on good and bad, i only know one guy killed in his condo and another one got robbed by the cops on the way out to the airport. I agree lots of other places to travel.

On a kinda good note tho, a guy once gave a local beach vendor $100 bill to get him some food and he never came back. Ripped him off for $100.
The tourist told another vendor the next day and he said he already knew about it. That was the last $100 the guy ever stole.

You should like hualtuco but keep n mind it’s a small area and traveling out side the city limits is advised as a no go, just ask around. The Sinaloa cartel dominates most of these areas but being so close to Guatemala many other cartels such as the Jalisco and gulf cartels are present including the los zetas that are mainly responsible for the action in the yucatan,Quintana roo territory’s...AKA cancun. Let’s not forget M.S and 18th street.

the media love selling us these touching stories as most media will. They love to see people terrorized, it sells news.
dont get me wrong this **** is actually happing down there. For most of us sun seekers we see sandy beaches and endless buffets,all inclusives and we forget about the country we’re traveling to because back home most of us feel safe and the police will save us all, buying some fun in a form of a pill and bumping to the beat in a Vancouver night club sound great.

so what I’m seeing down there is business as useal, life is cheap and no one gives it to you, you have to take it. We come with our wealth and stupidity and the gangs thrive over it, the more people the more profit. Hence the wars, take away the need for the drugs and the problem goes away...our money and domination is what there fighting over.

This war has been on going since the 60s, I’m sure most of us remember a friendly fellow that goes by the name of Manuel Noriega.
The push to send drugs north has always been there,it just so many people are now visiting Mexico and the organizations are there to feed the needs of drugs. It’s a massive amount of money on the table, so when you grow up poor this is a great opportunity to feed the need and defend your ground.

anyway getting to the question at hand. My traveled experience from panama through Mexico has been awesome, some times feeling not so safe but such is life.. Stay clear of the hot spots and be aware of the dangers, do some homework and stay safe.
As for some of us that get a high from gunfire and body’s hung from bridges, I love the adventure...I guess till I’m shot or shot at.

haven't been to mexico in 2 years, last go was a blast. Was at a club and ended up hanging with some locals and had a great time, super nice people. We went shopping in playa and got tatted and drank myself stupid. been 4 times and the DR 2 times and i have never seen any issues or felt scared for my life...only in the DR when you drink the presidente beer and chit your self the next day. can't wait to go again. Only time i ever been un easy on a vacation is in Maple Ridge BC at the rippers, think i was 22 the place was called caddy shacks...what a bar holy chit it was awesome, but when the 81 boys asked us to leave before 2, we did.....that's fear haha. If me and the wifey go to Mexico, sure i'll go off resort all day. If bringing the kids....no. Stay on the resort and enjoy a good time with zero worries. my 2 cents.

I will NEVER go back to Mexico after my last experience there, I have never been so scared for my family in my life and we are lucky to be alive what we saw was unexplainable, I cannot talk about my experience on social media because it could get me offed even here I believe, I have researched what has been happening and it is waaaaay worse then even the media are portraying, go ahead and holiday there, I can't stop you but I will never step foot in that country unless I am heavily armed and dangerous!

Pretty sure the cartel gets its money from drugs, prostitution, human trafficking and extortion, not tourism.
