Wonder how many Invermere valley and East Kootenay residents are driving into Calgary and Lethbridge for their Costco and walmart runs. And also, if they need acute care, guess which big city hospitals they'll be going to. Stars flies into BC constantly. It goes both ways.
Not very many local people traveling these days. Even so it makes no sense for me to travel 3 hrs each way and fight traffic to save a few bucks on shopping. If I can't get it in town I order it online.

What is the issue with me traveling to my cabin and staying to myself there versu staying at my home and staying to myself here. I just got home from a 2 week stay to get things organized with our business and personal finances. I’m planning on heading back to my cabin for the long haul in a few weeks. Doesn’t make me feel I’m above anyone. Just feel I have the right to go to either of my residences. If I had to rent or hotel I wouldn’t be going. I think this is fawking stupid.
If everyone did just stay in the "cabin" it wouldn't be an issue but retailers in town are seeing tourists shopping in family groups for something to do.
Group camping and parties at Kookanusa as well.
It's not the responsible people like yourself that are pissing people off. It's the old story it only takes a few bad apples....

Holy fawk, why is it that everything turns into an Alberta vs BC thing? The regional district directors are looking out for the residents. We don't have an option to go back home if the hospital is full. This is our home, just because you own property doesn't mean you're a resident.
Again and again I hear some Albertans scream I own property, I spend money I am so fawking important without me you would have nothing....
All provinces are asking residents to stay home, all mayor's, all health care professionals saying the same.
So say some one has stayed self quarantine for 3 plus weeks, been cooped up at home, has a place in b. C that pays more taxes, heating costs ect on

Decided that they can drive there, not stop and bring food with them

Can they still go to there b. C place, stay put where they feel relaxed, just like any other time they come out to get away from the city bull chit???

seeing how they want to restrict me going to my place in radium

https://nationalpost.com/news/south...ampers-cottage-owners-travelling-into-regions

seriously. to all those about to flame me, hear me out. Calgary will be deferring property tax payment in response to hardship caused by Covid 19. The city of Calgary is not responsible for the hardship, yet they are doing something to help.

If RDEK is so passionate about this suggestion, put some skin in the game. Pay back my property tax that you have/will take from me for the months you want me to stay away.

seems fair.

I, for one, have had enough Alberta bashing from some BC'ers.

PS, BC itself has more Covid cases and deaths than Alberta or Saskatchewan, yet they see the east as the threat.

"When they put you in a Pine Box ,will be when you will stop paying taxes !....

I don't see why not but the problem is some are treating this as a holiday and are not taking the requested measures seriously

There are no actual laws against traveling right now. Its being sold as more of a social duty. Peer pressure.

Holy crap people are uptight!!

The only thing different in my life and most people's lives, basically, is social distance. Oh ya', and also the stupid things I have to do in some stores (like follow the arrows on the floor and sanitize my hands. With hotels closed and most eateries closed or only offering take out, long distant travel would be a pain. Short trips are not a problem and there really is no need to be in contact with anybody. For the nay sayers, yes there is always the unexpected like an accident or unsuspecting medical condition that can happen. If it does, the system can deal with it and still deal with it in an effective manner. There have been no rumours of small hospitals being overflowing and not being able to handle the local population. There are hospitals for a certain number of people, like a per capita basis, and a built in number of overflow so to speak. Everything will work out just fine. People need to breathe and relax.

The world in a small community isn't gong to end if there are a number of visitors to the community who are socially responsible. The key words here are "socially responsible"!! The social distance thing works. If you are sick or have symptoms stay home. The media (I include TV and all the various forms of social media) and government have whipped this into a crazy time. People are not rational. People are not thinking. People are crazy.

So, to the title of the thread, why should you get a break on your property taxes? Why should you get a break on any taxes? We still need to pay our way. There has been and will be a tremendous re-set. Some will make it, others won't. Suck it up it princess and find a way. Don't drag people down to your level, try hard to get up to their level.

There has been way too much fear mongering and I am afraid it is only going to get worse before it gets better. Get outside, smell the cherry blossoms, listen to the birds, enjoy the last of the snow, and above all don't be a prick about the situation. Go with the flow...........sort of!!

I mentioned to the girl at the store yesterday, that I was allergic to the hand sanitizer.................she handled it well and we both had a great laugh! I know she was just doing her job and she knew I was just trying to laugh a little.

I don't see why you think you should be exempt from paying taxes for any reason at all. That's like saying every time there is an emergency evacuation (such as wildfires) you should get reimbursed for those days. The bottom line is that ANY travel increases the risk of spreading this virus.

This is what has been reported to the rdek from local businesses. I have been staying at home renovating, fixing fences, getting the green house ready and tending to the horses.

Only go to town once a week for beer and weed, maybe a few groceries

There has been a spike in personal injuries due to people taking on home renovations and repairs and hurting themselves..... you are s if not more likely to be injured during arenovation project than in a car accident so the arguement that travelling increases the risk for automobile accidents and potentially takes away healthcare resources is a moot point.

Hitting your thumb with a hammer is a little different than a head on car crash.

True, but falling from a ladder or electrical shock are not much different.

Why is it when referring to my example it's best case scenario but when referring to yours it's worst case scenario.... MANY more fender benders not requiring medial attention than fatal head on collisions and yes I will concede that many more thumbs are hit with hammers than falls from ladders but most fatal falls are from ladder use under 6' off the ground..... just sayin

This whole topic pisses me off. I have a very outspoken Facebook "friend" who has been yapping alot about this. And a realtor to boot! You sure didn't mind when you were benefiting by making big commission's off all them dirty Albertans, but as soon as it doesn't benefit you, they should stop coming? Give me a break.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're paying property taxes on your property you have every right to go reside in that property. Especially if you're talking Calgary to invermere. Give me a fawking break. If you start feeling symptoms jump in your car and drive back to Calgary.

How are people going into all the stores that are closed anyways.
