The girlfriend and I had a couple free hours today so we took a drive 20 min past Silver Sands and did a handfull of Avi and Beacon Recovery exercises.

Nice to see that someone did a test pit. Did you do a compression test on that layer? How many taps with your shovel did it take for it to fall away from the column? I do see lots of layers there, but the one really concerning me is the one where it sheared off. That layer looks to be about 3-4 inches thick of a hoar frost layer....which is VERY unstable especially since it's buried so deep. The right trigger could make one hell of a slab avalanche and definitely a red flag. On another note....since we do not have accurate forecasts for the Northern Rockies Region you can send your observations to forecaster@avalanche.ca, with pictures. Every bit helps. Thanks! Safe sledding!

There were definitely lots of layers in that snow but surprisingly it held together better than i had imagined when we did a pressure test. I gave it 10 good smacks and didn't get any layers to give. The layer i stopped at I actually removed with my shovel, came off easy but it stood up to the pressure test. We could have picked a better spot though, we realised after we were closer to the creek then we thought, this could have added to the ice layers. However, still not the safest Sledding conditions.

Took my Buddy out for his first mountain ride yesterday at Tumbler, he did great, but my ribs hurt pretty bad from Laughing so hard.
