Im 16, dont have my class 5 only my learners, and I have been riding for 5 years, for 4 of them I was riding alone in the feilds up to 2 miles away. Its only been this season with my new sled that I have been going up to 6 even 10 miles away. My grandpa takes me to his farm, and from there I go on the iron horse and the trans-canada to brodyk lake when we go ice fishing. I even go along the highway and go through the fields. Im a responsible rider, dont go more than 80km/h on the trail, dont cut barb wire fences, and dont go ripping across the highway and dont do jumps. I have nobody to ride with, and my grandpa cant come because his sled isnt insured and it cant keep up with mine.

I didnt see the bit on TV but was pulled over in Parkland County (Parkland Village) 2 weeks ago with my 12 year old driving and me riding on the back. We went to the store and back (.5 KM) so I didnt have my helmet on (not smart I admit) when a peace officer pulled us over. He mentioned the class 5 thing and noted that kids are not allowed to ride on thier own. I said I was under the impression that if you were on the machine with them or beside on another machine all was good...the peace officer didnt really know for sure so I was issued a $200 ticket for no helmet.

I wonder if they'll outlaw the little electric quads kids ride in my niegborhood too! Losers!

I agree, but in that case i say just pin it and go through fields and they might give up chase.

Mike has a point its like the gov would rather your kids hang out at the mall than be out doors. I have been riding machines since i was 3 same with my siblings and i belive we're better people cause we spent that time out doors with family and friends than at the mall or in doors playing video games. Just another stupid law made by some one in a suit that knows nothing. I think if parent is pressent than it should be alowed, supervision is a must cause you cant just let a 10 year old go off by him/her self for hour.

I agree with the age thing but not the class 5. I know some 25 yr. olds that still dont have their license. We always took the kids out. What do you do with all the youngsters with dirtbikes. My daughter constantly road around our subdivision. Glad they all have there drivers now but it would suck if as a parent you've made the investment and now they can't ride.

To the mall it is .............. here's your drug money kids, have fun!!

next thing will be a special liscence like for boats and bikes anything for the gov to grab an extra buck just like the gd liscence what joke
I have been sledding since I was 10 or so and never had any trouble
not a bad idea to put on a safe riding course and give out a certificate to the kids, thats better than a clas 5 and no training
I wonder what kind of training the cops have for snowmobiles
they probably cant even change a belt

What is wrong with letting kids be kids. I can remember as a kid riding up on an active logging road with our dirt bikes to go and roll rocks in a canyon! The truckers would radio each other and watch out for us, as we would watch out for them. Life is about experiences, failures and success. If kids are out on sleds, bikes or quads sure they may get into a bit of trouble, maybe they won't. Having a class 5 licence won't change any of that. Do we all obey the speed limit on the highway when we drive?

There not authorized to, even to change plugs. They have to call some one to pick up the sled and haul it off tho their shop to be matinenced.

the one thing that needs to be noted is that to ride unsupervised you need the class 5. with supervision there is no license required, daughter and son both under 16 wife is super strict to obeying all and any laws there is and may or may not be trust me on that one. i get my azz chewed if i speed by 5kmph:eek: but anyways did the trailseekers rally officer asked the daughter for the reg/plate for their sled, she took it out of the pouch on the back of the seat and gave it to him. no problem. he then started a conversation with her on if she was enjoying the ride, cold etc, just small talk. but very nice about it. no problem as we were both with her.

as posted earlier in another post, yiou got a 200 fine for not wearing your helmet, dont care how far you were going, if your stupid enough to ride without it you deserve the ticket, seriously, sorry for calling you stupid but what if????????????????? anything man, lots of riders get injured or killed from lack of wearing helmet, what if a car going by hit ditch you gotta swerve hit tree, debris off passing cars hits you, etc many things could of happened. you said you son was with you so i wont even go into the speed thing but throttle sticks, broken carb spring or something causes it, remember these machines do 0-60 in about 2 seconds.

always plan for the worst and hope for the best.

ps not sayng i have never ripped it up in the yard, loaded etc with out wearing a helmet just saying we all should probably be wearing them more.

if anyone wants all to see all the new atv/sled laws etc there is a pamphlet available at registries that lists them and the fines they come with.

Wow don't even know where to start here, my son is 7 and we just rode 500 km on the iron horse last thurs and friday and he rides his own machine!!! freestyle 300 he's been riding a quad since he was 3 started out on a yam 50 now rides a can am 90x for the last few years, now he has his own sled and we enjoy going out together and riding hell I still ride with my DAD and he's 67 try to keep up with him :) I'm not against a safety course for kids to operate a machine but come on 16 hell most 16 yr olds don't want anything to do with their parents by then. I for one won't let that happen age or not my kids will be riding with me for years to come. It's all about RESPECT of the machine no matter big or small it will bite you sooner or later if you don't respect it. Couldn't imagine puting a 16yr old on my 800 and tell him to have a great time cause you and I know how the outcome of that would be. Helmets and supervision is a must at all times no helmet no ride for us. Some of these green activists should leave the house, the paper and pens and come enjoy a sport or two instead of trying to just write more rules for the rest of us that really enjoy the out doors. my 2 cents

Mike doesn't seem to get it's not giving your c
kids drugs and drop him at the mall its the idea of spending time with your kids and led them in the right direction and the mall is one of the worst places to let your kids hange out at.
barry

Hi guys
How do u like the news tonight on the county of parkland that is saying that u can't ride a quade or a snowmobile in the county unless u have a class 5 licence. I do believe that they have safty on their mind but I believe that a person with a licence doen' mean they know how to ride these machines, I,ve seen 40 year old guys with a child like mind. The biggest problem I find is that peaple use these machines as a baby sitter instead of using it as a family sport. My kids have been riding snowmoblies since they were 6 and now they are 18 and 16 and we have been in the mountains for 7 years and I always ride with them. The machines are mying but each one of my kids ride their own , my daughter is on a 600mm and my son is on a 1000 vector moutain and I ride a apex mountain. My kids can ride my apex anytime they want but when we go snowmobiling I go with them. These are the best times we have and we talk all summer long about the next winter. So to the peaple who let their kids ride the quades and snowmobiles by themselves should take a look at what they are missing by being with their kids and creating the great memorels that it brings. The times I have with my kids are the best times of my life and I hope it won't be taken away by the rules that are starting to be inforce to help protect our children from ourselfves because we are to busy with everything else in our lives than being with our kids. I see it to often where parents use sports as a baby sitter while their kids are playing they are somewhere else. I believe the more u are involed with your kids the less chance they have in getting into trouble and this includes in everything in life. Their are somethings they do we will never know about but hopfully knowone gets hurt when they do it . Sorry for getting of the topick but this really pisses me of that now u are going to have to be 16 with a class 5 licence to ride a quad or a snowmoble in the county of parkland because someone has to protect our kids from ourselves because we are to busy to ride with them and make sure they are safe. This is just the start because what happened with smoking it started in one place and look where it is now , soon u will need a licence to smoke to haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Barry

I found out the hard way once thats been the law for quite some time. I disagree with using the class five to cover sleds/quads. If they want licenses they should be their own like the boating one is. But private property is private property and anyone can operate.

Did you see that POS he was riding on the news? Bet if he can only generate enough income, show the county how lucrative his little brain wave is, he'll be on a new sled next year courtesy of the tax payers

I fight that in court there no provincial law saying you have to wear a helmet so is county above province

Well when we got the kids a better sled this winter, they said private property is different. But off private property is 16 and over, class 5. Except at Trailseekers , can be riding under 16. Because of the leasing the land thing. I put it in a thread somewhere on here at that time.I don't know if this changes or not with new laws. I think that the helmet thing is a good idea, it's your head man, unless you have a thick skull like me, you need a helmet. Lol

I think this whole thing is BULL. How in the hell can a class 5 license govern safe driving on a snowmobile? I bet theres gonna be a by law saying you have to parallel park your sled in your drive way soon. And a rev limit in the mountains. 7500rpm or more and thats a 500$ fine please. Your pipe is over 70dbs right at the exhaust BAM!!! 700$ fine. This just boils my blood.
