Does anyone smoke their own meat? We are interested in smoking and have seen a reasonably priced one in bass pro http://www.basspro.com/Masterbuilt-Two-Door-Propane-Smoker/product/10226688/146858 and wondered if it was any good? Does anyone have any somking books that they would recommend for beginners? Also could someone tell me the difference between a propane vs electric smoker? Pro/Cons would be good too.

Thanks for any help

John

I love smokers, I used to smoke almost everything, even smoked potatoes lol..... I have built my own that ran on charcoal, and used the electric smokers (big chief). I prefer electric I would assume much easier to control heat and able to cold smoke, but they may be harder to hot smoke. I would love to pick up a big smoker, I dont think you would do wrong with it. As for books, "Google" has everything you need to know.... Good luck and have fun with it

We like to throw steaks and chops or chicken in the smoker for a little bit before cooking to enhance the flavor Mmmmmmm, yummy.

if your learning you can also try the redneck smoker, you use a old bbq and poot a metal plate at the bottom with wood chips

I have the Bradley with the electric controller. Spend the extra and make sure to get the electric control. Set temp and forget it- no need to keep adjust and fiddling with temperature control as your meat warms up and begins cooking when hot smoking.
