Sledders with new diesel trucks needing DEF

Apparently, most gas stations in BC have not heard of this stuff yet. Took my buddy's new 2011 D-max to revy this past weekend....got the "1200km until DEF fluid runs out" message just as we left...figured we'll just buy a jug when we get there. HA. Not at Shell, not at Chevron in Revy. Not at Petrocan or Shell in Golden.

Anyways...we made it home before the dreaded "limp mode" kicked in. But thought I would put this out there for you boys to top that tank up before you leave, because nobody seemed to know anything about it in the "normal" gas stations we hit. I don't think carrying a jug is any use, since the crap freezes. (I'm not a diesel guy, but this seems like a poorly concieved method of pollution control, no?)

it does freeze but thaws pretty easy. -30 and never had any units freeze up.
chitty thing is if you shut the truck off twice after it runs out without refilling it it "WILL NOT START" until it is refilled.
trust me on that one happened in the shop trying to move a unit with the tank off. its programmed into the comp so guys cant run without the crap.

If it freezes easy how does the tank on the truck stay thawed? or is there a heating system in the urea tank. Seems like a better system then the DPF or regen system, no loss of miledge or clogged filters, just have to remember to keep the tank topped off or carry a jug, no different than remembering to carry washer fluid.

also when it runs out you get 1 full tank of fuel before it limits the vehical speed to 60kpm and after that tanks it linits to 5 kpm,so either way you would make it back

the engine coolant warms h fluid in the tank. as for the injection line it had a electric current running along it to keep it warmed. kinda like a heat tape.

They still have dpf systems but the urea allows them to go a lot longer between regens.

Any Crappy tire has it, I posted this awhile back in this forum.

If you know you are going to run out, take a jug with you before you go.

Any Diesel engine / Heavy truck repair shop or dealer should be stocking this by now. I know all the major heavy truck dealers in Edmonton carry it.

Isn't a tank of Urea good for about 10,000km? Wouldn't common sense tell you to top it up once and awhile... I drive a Dodge which doesn't take Urea (Yet) but really can't see it being that big of an inconvience. I seen on the Fords the Urea tank is right next to the Fuel tank so you are basically reminded of it everytime you fill up...Not many excuses for running out.

Go to brenntag and get terracare its cheapest on market have not found anyone cheaper yet.

All I was doing with this thread is just providing a heads up to those that are affected, that DEF is not readily available in these one-horse towns. My buddy is not a dolt....his truck was brand new, so he wanted to see how far a full tank of DEF would go. We left on Friday and the odometer was around 4600 km....the "1200km warning" came on. We made it to Revy and back (1100+km) with no more warnings....but we did hope to add DEF in Revy 'just in case'.

Real good reason to buy a dodge LOL, A buddy of mine drives truck and he told me that the guys in the states have been topping up the urea tanks with water when they can't find any, and it takes the computer a while to figure out that the fluid isn't doing it's job. This is on the bigger trucks can't see it not working on the smaller trucks.
