Hello, and a thanks in advance to anyone who replies :p. I just purchased a 2011 ram 2500 cummins. My plan was to put a sled deck on it with 2 atv's and tow an extremely light travel trailer or tent trailer. I was going to slowly put the pieces together for next spring. However to my great disappointment the sticker on my door sill states a max payload of 2030lbs :(, Is anyone out there running a deck with sleds or atvs dealing with this low of a payload? I've looked a little into airbags but the don't actually add to your max payload just help keep things more stable at least that's what i understand so far. Anyone have any info or suggestions? The truck has a lot of power.... there must be something i can do and still be legal and safe on the road.

Might be able to get away with it in Alberta, wouldn't drive in BC loaded up like that. Pretty much need a 1 ton to haul quads and a trailer legally.

Even if I loose the trailer I'm still going to be slightly over my payload :s the trailer just adds to it

Towed stuff isn't included in payload. It's part of your combined GVW, which is irrelevant if you are already over with the quads.

I know the trailer weight isn't included but the tongue weight is :p. Wouldn't be much on a smaller trailer, probably around 300 to 500 but it means I'd be that much over payload.

The way I calculate it I'll be right on max with a deck, 2 atvs, and 2 people. But then however much gear I have, plus is I tow anything my gear and tongue weight is what I'll be over with.

this same question comes up every year, weigh your truck empty at the weigh scales, weigh your front axle, weigh your rear axle. subtract your weighed weight from the rear axle gvw and that is what you can legally carry anywhere. you take your gvw -rear gvw-front gvw they don't add up to 0. axle rating will apply. you may or may not get away with it. otherwise 1 sled on deck 2 on trailer you should be good.

My 2006 Ram 3500 has a towing capability of 16,400 lbs, a payload of 5,020 lbs and Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 23,000 lbs and 12,200 lbs, respectively. When it comes to towing, both 2500 and 3500 Rams can tow up to 5,000 pounds on the Class IV receiver hitch, which is standard on the truck. To tow heavier trailers requires either a weight-distribution hitch, 5th wheel, or gooseneck. Ram Crew 2500 2WD can tow trailers up to 13,450 pounds and payloads up to 3,160 pounds. The 4×4 models lose about 700 pounds capacity across the board because of the added drivetrain components. Your close in your payload. Numbers add up quickly on 2500 vs the 3500, obviously. Unfortunately this has you in a situation :( do you play safe and do it right or just go and worry about consequences later when they develope. If they ever do. I was there when I had my '04 Ram 1500 2wd. Found it wasn't the truck for my needs but ran it for 2yrs anyways. Then ordered my '06 3500 4x4 and haven't looked back :)

my 1500 avalanche could tow 5000 from the hitch, i think the 2500 should do more then that, i recall the dealer saying 10000, and 20000 with a 5th wheel

the only difference with the 3500 i was told was extra leaf spring? so putting airbags in a 3/4 might be the same? BAH! I dunno might just stick to a trailer, would just really like to get the quads up on a deck

Class IV hitches are for up to 10,000 lbs. GTW and 1,000 to 1,200 lbs. of tongue weight. This type of hitch is usually a weight-distributing hitch.
Class V hitches are for extra heavy loads greater than 10,000 lbs. GTW and more than 1,200 lbs. tongue weight. This type of hitch is usually a weight-distributing hitch also. This type of hitch may have up to a 2-1/2 inch receiver with a 3/4-inch pinhole

if ya weigh it then you know for sure, weigh fron axle and the rear axle, combine if ya can. suprising how much stuff adds weight.

the bumber hitch has a rating usually 500 lb weight on hitch with 5000 lb trailer towing rating, change the hitch and ya usually can haul more. dealer salesman usually have no idea, tell him ya want it in writing and you'll be looking at him to pay the fines. :D

they will say and just about do anything to make a sale.

it's shut down. the closest to you would be at the hwy 60 junction on the yellowhead, Acheson exit. there is a self weigh there on the north side of highway 16, or the southbound lanes on hwy 2 at Leduc.
