Sled cooling

Just wondering if anyone has changed their cooling medium out to something like "engine ice" or "moto cool" from motul? I have some overtemp issues with my xp on some trails and I know this stuff drops the operating temp by up to 15ºc, I run it in my sportbikes and I noticed a nice drop in running temps, also have buddies that run it in their ice racing bikes so cold temps isnt an issue.

freezing point of engine ice is claimed to be around -20F, bel ray moto chill is -36F. my sled is stored unheated, I would go with the bel ray. a cheaper alternative I have heard guys using is a couple drops of dish soap per gallon of coolant, but I don't think I would try it....they say it does the same thing as water wetter.

what conditions are you riding when your xp overheats?

On some packed trails....either scratchers or a longer snow flap. 15 degrees ain't that much, you will be running just below over heat temp instead of right at it, and if you are overheating, your sliders are probably not getting that much snow for lube either, especially with today's taller tracks. Scratchers will kick up the snow to keep your sled cooled better and keep your sliders lubed. You can still use the water wetter in addition to scratchers.

I have scratchers and it still overtemps, my flap is trimmed a fair bit. Mostly on the slow tight single track through the trees into places like holy grail.

A problem I have seen is people that put on longer tracks. It the cooler is not replaced or moved back the area that should provide
most of the cooling has no cooler! A lot of the cooling takes place in the last six inches or so of the cooler. Something to consider
if changing to a longer track. You end up with more load and less cooling!

Yeah, that tight single track is tough on all sleds, if its like the same stuff we encounter, its a one sled wide trough that you can't get out of and big 3 ft whoops that you can't gas it through. There is probably not enough track speed to kick the snow up into the tunnel, if your flap is trimmed a lot of the snow is probably being sent out the back. A longer flap will deflect the rooster tail off the track and back up into the tunnel, instead of sending out the back. Apart from put a longer flap on, use the water wetter or get the track speed up (i.e. ride faster - not always possible) not much you can do. You can try cleaning up your coolers with scotchbrite to get a little more heat transfer if they are oxidized, probably not going to help a ton though. Since you have an XP with the cooler on the top of the tunnel as well, stop every little bit and toss some snow up on the top cooler. If you are stuck in the single wide sled trough just stick your leg out in a low spot and knock some snow onto the back of the tunnel, no need to even stop :) and it might help a little. Sorry, there isn't a magic cure for this, unfortunately.
