IMO those attachments are useless and i'm surprised they sell any. I bet that Cat one is like $15-20k. If someone needs one enough to justify spending that coin, just buy a used mini ex it will be a lot more productive. If it's only being used rarely, you can't justify spending that. Just rent one, but no one would rent one because you'd just rent a mini ex instead.
They attract a market of exactly no one.... If they were only a few thousand I could see it. But they are slow as hell and way too expensive to be useful.

True but what can a guy get for $15-20USD in a mini hoe in that size?
The thing I like about the skidsteer or tractor attachment is I don't have a whole second machine to maintain.
It would just be for personal use.
According to the cat video it takes 3.5 ton mini ex attachments, you can buy a decent hoe in that size for $20k usd. Yes it is a separate machine to maintain, but it will be a lot quicker doing any job then that attachment. If you're not using it that often, i'd either just rent a mini hoe, or hire someone to do it. The odd $500 job is better left to someone with proper equipment then a really expensive attachment. For example I can dig 100' of 3' deep trench in hard clay with my mini hoe in an hour like nothing, how long would that attachment take? 3-4? And the hassle of doing it beyond that.
The one that doesn't swivel and you need to turn the machine for each scoop, that would burn up the tracks and drive motors so fast it's not even funny.

I have a Komatsu pc40 that I would sell for 15k needs a bit of work but use it all the time and it will outwork a skidsteer backhoe hands down.

I don't know anything about these little rigs yet. But I will keep it in mind.
Year? Hours? Max dig? Thumb?

We use a cat308 excavator, Deere and jcb for skidsteers. Personally never thought much of the "skidsteer backhoe", a mini excavator will out perform 3:1 easily in most conditions imo. Most "backhoe" attachments use stabilizers, meaning every time you want to pull forward you need to raise them... another drawback is you don't have full 360 degrees of swing. In my opinion the benefit of not having to maintain another piece of equipment does not justify going attachment over excavator. If you do decide to get a excavator I would sooner get a excavator that may have a few more hours/ few years older than a newer abused unit. Nothing worse than running a worn out excavator lol.

Mini's are way more abused too, and don't last the hours the bigger ones do. IMO I wouldn't buy one over maybe 5,000 hours. A big thing is if you can find out previous owner. Mine came from Pidherny's and i've had pretty good luck with it. Has almost 4,000 hours on it now, 1,000 since i've owned it have the odd issues here and there but nothing much. Needs some pins which will be $$ but i'm guessing they are original so it's pretty good.
I would run away from any rental mini hoe's though. The abuse someone who doesn't know what they are doing will inflict on them is huge. I would bet virtually all of them the swing bearing and motor will fail prematurely due to people trying to push stuff sideways which is a huge no-no with any hoe. Add in things like digging over drives, hitting drives with bucket, etc etc.

How many ton do these units become useful at?
I guess I mean well rounded.
Big enough to load into a truck small enough to move around with a one ton truck and trailer?
Mine is a 6 ton, wouldn't want much smaller to load a dump truck. It weights about 13,000lbs I pull it with my 1 ton on a gooseneck. It is the perfect size imo, small enough to get into most areas, big enough to be useful for so many things. But it's also the brand, it's a Takeuchi. I've ran a volvo and wacker neuson 8 tons and the Takeuchi 6 ton will out dig both like nothing and both of them were virtually brand new rentals. It is impressive how well it will dig. It will load a tandem dump truck in about the same time as a 75hp skidsteer if it's on same level of ground as truck, if you can get 3-4' feet higher it will load twice as fast.

Haven't heard a lot of good of doosan overall, basically get what you pay for. Kubota I haven't seen much around, not really sure. A lot of it is just looking at motor, pumps, drives, etc brands. A lot are fairly similar. I know bobcat and even john deere minis aren't suppose to be great.

Yep I've had both on a rental, deere was a 50 and bobcat a 35... didnt find either of them that great. And I agree with ya on under 5000 hrs. if possible. Meant id sooner get say a 2010 with say 4000hrs than a 2013 with maybe 3200 hrs thats an ex rental. IMO ex rentals arent even worth looking into generally.
We have a couple kubota minis at work. They’ve been pretty bulletproof.

Cant say anything about longevity on the kubota minis, but rented the neighbors for a day and was pretty happy with it. Am also curious to hear more feedback from those in the know. Its one of those things that I dont need, but would sure love to have!
