so my buddy took my '07 summit for a spin (1 day after i got it back from the 5th break down) took it accross the field and when he was just about back in the yard it started smoking, he opend the side panel and found like a 6 inch flame coming from the brakes. The way he explained it he said it was like the track froze up and then the brakes lit up..

what would cause that?

he never let the e brake off,, JUST HEATS UP AND SMOKES THE BELT,,, seen it many times,, usualy the gf lol

i think it has too doo with the brakes.... maybe they were on or something...js

well it WAS my sled (some what still is) sold most of it to my brother, and he said he didnt put the e brake on, but i'm wonder when he loaded it up and hit the brakes could they have froze up?

well if they froze they would let up a bit I would think,, not sure how they would freeze,,, if there were no fluid they would not grab and or work and create no heat,,

leaving the brake on has happened many times to people,, the sled will drive especialy if you hit the throtle to get going you wouldnt even feel it, until the pads melt stiff against the rotor lol

I have also seen a ground wire light on fire on the exhaust can on a xp? I think its a ground,,, the can melted it and pooof light up....

hope the parts you sold to your brother were the burnt up parts, he did not take the parking brake off before riding.

Yep sorry to say he left the e brake... even one notch, had the same thing happen to my 600 last year got it out right away but still did like 1800 buck worth of damage. Now I have removed the lock for the e brake and never have to worry about that again!

X2. Wife did that to the neighbors sled, back before she knew better. I fixed everything, she said she'll always check the brake before the throttle.

100% left the e-brake on.

It can get bad enough that it melts the oil container and causing the sled to burn down. I'd check the tank over very closely.

dont feel bad ... i had an uncle hold one of my turning sleds wide open across the lake and well everyone one knows what happens when that happens ... you know what he didn't even offer to pay for the damage needless to say he will never use one of my sleds again and i will tell him that...

I remember an in a magazine (snotech I think) about some 06 and 07 rev brakes burning up. Seems that when the brakes heated up a bit, the heat would transfer to the brake fluid which would expand and force the brake on causing more heat and in a couple of cases, fire. Whether the brake fluid was contaminated or something in those cases, I don't know. I believe it happened on brand new machines though.

The brakes lose their effectiveness when hot but the heat keeps on building if engaged.

looks like the guy is a stand up guy, help him out and both of you can install parts, have a few "pops". can't say it was totally his fault, as you should have gone through the controls etc with him, although most people don't.

still a stand up guy though. :d
