Lots of positive reviews on it. Lacking in payload but good on fuel and tows good. Not a fan of the belt drive oil pump however that needs the trans pulled at 150 000 km to change.

Looks like a lot of design revisions to them when compared to the 2.8 in the Colorado, essentially a clean slate engine. They even moved the DPF under the hood. One of my co-workers went from a gas Colorado to the diesel Silverado and really likes it.

I'm not convinced the longevity will be there compared to the big duramax though, 277hp from a 3.0 diesel is a lot. And as mentioned above there a few questionable design choices yet to pass the test of time.

Based on our experience with the 2.8 Colorado I'd wait at least a year before getting a 3.0, all our issues came out during the winter, and GM doesn't seem to carry a large inventory of parts for these small diesels making repair times long. I'd be letting someone else be the guinea pig for them.

I don’t see the point of a diesel half ton? So you can have less towing, higher maintenance cost, less power, less fuel economy and buy more expensive fuel (I know it’s cheaper now but will go up again for sure)

The diesel half tons get better fuel economy, about 30% depending on the model. Maintenance costs aren't much different either, oil capacities are similar to the gasoline engines so costs there are similar too. Diesel engines do have more expensive parts, but generally also have longer power-train warranties. Hard parts will be more expensive off warranty though depending on how long a person intends to keep the truck. But in my experience you are also way more likely to get a lemon in a small diesel than a gas.

From what I’ve seen which is pretty minimal mind you they don’t get any better mileage then the same year of gassers. Neighbour power stroke half ton only gets 14l 100km. Eco boost will get that.

The baby diesel we drive and everyone else I know that has one does pretty good with them. In the city there really isn't much of a difference mind you, it's on the highway where they shine. Ours was rated at 8.3 L/100km on the highway and we regularly get that at 115 km/hr, we have gotten as good as 6.9L/100km if you can keep the cruise set at 90 to 100 km/hr.

Was talking to Jason Bischoff this morning, he's got a 1500 Diesel GM for work now, says he can go from Edmonton to McMurray and back on 90 liters of fuel and still have 1/8 or better left in the tank.......

Holly hell thats impressive. My Dmax can make the same trip. But that’s on 130ish litres of fuel. And taking it easy. Cruise set at 116 on 63.

Wondering if the gm baby diesel more reliable than the ford or ram babies? Maybe issues are no longer but the couple guys I know who had rams they were nightmares if worked at all. Ford not use about reliability but I think what turned guys off is the $5000 for the diesel up charge over a gas.

How much cash extra is the gm diesel over a 5.3?

It's about $3k more over the 5.3.

I think part of the issue with the 3.0 powerstroke, 3.0 ecodiesel, and 2.8 duramax is they were taken from other markets and modified to meet EPA emissions. In the case of the 2.8 duramax the most common to fail parts are the turbo, injectors, and def system, which are all new parts to the engine when they brought it over from the Asian market. That same engine made 200hp reliably in asia and struggles to be reliable at 181hp in North America. Ford and Dodge I believe have similar issues as they both ported their 3.0 V6 diesels over from the European market.

My serious hope is that with the clean slate design of the 3.0 inline 6 duramax the engineers had the opportunity to properly design all components of the engine to meet emissions, instead of putting on bandaid parts like the other 3 small diesels. But only time will tell, and I wouldn't be buying one in the first year, or likely the second year either.

Drove the 6.2 gas then the 3.0 diesel was smoother and quiet on take off and same price so got the diesel will see how it pans out.
