omg please send pics when u have the pups..I will be getting another Shiba as soon as we get a house, I freakin love these dogs. Unfortunately, Cash hates puppies so I will be looking into getting a younger, mature female. Eventually I would like 3, so that I have all 3 main colors (black/tan/, red & sesame) but if i ever come across a white one which is extremely rare I would snatch it up too!

Hello Lady Dirt,

I've been reading your comments about your dog and I've been very interested in purchasing one from the Hillsdale Kennels in Sherwood Park. Do you have any info that I might need to know about this breed, or just cool little facts about their manurisms?

Hello Lady Dirt,

Yes, they are great little dogs Snow Bunny, and the breeder I got mine from is wonderful, I can't wait to purchase another one from her! (just waiting for the right one to come along!) I could tell you lots, but its easier if you just check out her website... Hillsdale Kennel Registered Shiba Inus - Main, she has tons of info on the breed, as well as lots of pics of her clan, and info on the dogs, etc.

My experience with a Shiba as been amazing, and everyone you talk to with one will prob say quite the same. They are extremely intelligent dogs, sometimes too smart as they can figure out your weak points very fast and take advantage of it, but nonetheless, they are great. Non-barkers, non-poop&pee in the house (they are practically born house trained), very loyal, learn tricks very easily, they are great with kids although they can be very territorial around other dogs, protective (good watch dogs), they easily attapt to their surroundings too, Shibas can be excellent appartment dogs since they only need to go outside 3 times a day, or they can be great outdoor dogs aswell. Have a look at the website, check it out and I even suggest arranging an appointment to just visit the kennel and see some of the dogs. Let me know how you make out!

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Lady Dirt. I was on the website a few times now and am learning some good info about the breed there. I even spoke with Maureen who is the breeder for that site you told me about. They really do sound like wonderful dogs and the pics are so so cute. I am probably going out to see her here in a few days to see what the dogs are like in person to see if I really do like them. I'm afraid a bit though because we already have a pug and a cat so I don't know how the shiba's will react to that (them being territorial around other dogs). So I don't know, I guess I'll wait to hear what Maureen has to say about that though. I hope you don't mind either when I was talking to Maureen I told her I found out about her website through you, who she remembers well.

yes, that is okay, I know Maureen pretty well as she is Cash's babysitter. I always call her when I have questions or issues with my little guy. She is a lot of help. She also sells food which I try to purchase from her cuz its a lot cheaper then buying at the pet store. I guarantee she will introduce you to some siblings/offspring from my little man. I believe Cash's daugher Lexi is going to be having pups in the near future. Either way, I guarantee you will enjoy your visit out there, and the dogs and good luck! Maureen really knows her Shibas, and she won't sell a dog unless she feels its going to a good home. She wouldn't sell me a puppy because of my lifestyle and my accomodations being in an appartment, but she paired me up with Cash, who was a perfect fit for me and my lifestyle!

Oh and by the way, as you will see at Maureens.. Shibas LOVE kitties!!! Maureen raises all her pups in the presence of her 2 cats that live in the house, so they bond quite well with cats. Cash is doing a lot better with other dogs, but him being a bit more ont he territorial side since he was a breeding male, but now he loves playing with other dogs..it just took some time and a lot of exposure to get him used to other dogs... since when he lived at Maureens he was stictly kenneled and could only socialize with certain dogs. I find that he definitely prefers females over other male dogs, and she usually recommends pairing a shiba with the opposite sex.

Yes Maureen was saying that she has Lexi right now who she will be placing soon. And she also has Cash's granddaughter who will be having a litter soon. You never know I could end up with one of Cash's great grand daughter's one day soon. She said that she sold one of her Shiba's to a family that had a pug as well and the Shiba did just fine. The pug even passed on and they got a new pug and the Shiba was still fine. I don't think there should be a real problem with them getting along, I hope. Do you know what the average price of a Shiba is, I'm not familiar with this breed so pricing I don't know what to expect.

I paid $1000 for Cash, but for puppies I beleive she charges a little higher.. I think up to $1500. I got Cash when he was 2 yrs old, and he is 4 now. He was a good age for me because I didn't have time to train a puppy..or the right accomodations.. but he got attached to me and my boyfriend right away the 1st night we had him he whined until we let him on the bed.. he is definitely a spoiled little brat now and he pretty much gets his way (shibas are good at that - watch out!) he follows us around every time we get up to walk around or go somewhere.. he watches the both of us like a hawk, and if either of us is gone, he cries for "mommy" or "daddy" at the door when he thinks we've been gone too long lol. He's really cute. Maureen probably told you that Cash is a "runt", so his relations are quite small as well.. but Maureen does have pretty large shibas in her gang too..I just preferred a smaller dog for the appt. Let me know how your "tour" works out, and which one you fall in love with! I know Maureen imposed the idea of me taking this one female named "CeCe", she's very tiny and gets along really well with Cash, great temper but 2 dogs in an appt is just a bit much right now :(

A smaller dog might be better since my boyfriend doesn't want anything to large in the house right now. Sounds like Cash is a real sweetheart, makes me want one more and more. I will definitely let you know how things went on my visit. Thanks again for the chat, it's helped me learn more about the breed.:)

I couldn't agree more about the Shiba's. Too smart. Both of ours were very tiring untill 1yr old. but after that couldn't ask for better dogs!!!!!!
