Sorry I after watching the video a page back, I had been thinking of this, but wasn't sure where to post...

17 years ago we went to the SPCA to have a look around and see if there were any dogs that would suit us….We had all agreed on what we were looking for, a male dog med size, active but able to live in the city….

We looked at a few different dogs when we came across a pair of sheltie /heeler cross pups, we asked to see the male, but the SPCA worker asked if we could take them both out, they need the exercise….a male and a female…although both were cute, the male seemed more interested in running and playing, we had been leaning towards him any way….but something started to present itself, the female went everywhere the kids and I went, if one of us walked away, she would run back and worth and look at you…if you sat down she would come over and sit on you, needless to say we left with Duchess, she had picked us…..

By the time she was a year old, she could fetch, sit, stay, heal, come on command, but she loved to play Frisbee, sitting still for too long was a problem, she had to be moving, so we started taking her on bike rides, she loved to run, heal evolved to simply mean anywhere I pointed to….
We moved out of the city, and bought quads and horses, Duchess came everywhere we did, hiking, riding quad’s, horse’s, bike’s, in the canoe, swimming….you could not keep Duchess out of water, she would lay her belly in a mud puddle if she couldn’t find water….
As we got more and more horse’s she learnt to go fetch the horse’s, the only trouble it was done her way, the heard was coming at a full run, could never get her to slow down.

At family gatherings, her herding and protective instinct would kick in, if a toddler was separated from her mother and started crying, Duchess would herd the kid towards mom….had a few moms upset over the years as they thought she was trying to bite the kid….
Duchess was at home where ever her people went, inside or outside, summer or winter….I took her to work a few times, and she would quietly lay down in the corner, lift her head if I got up or if someone came in…

The past year, she was on a couple of med’s to help her cope….age had handed her arthritis, and a host of some other issues that older dogs go through, one thing stayed consistent, she greeted us and or anyone that came to our farm, in the morning and last thing at night she walked around the house, that trip kept talking longer and longer…

Friday July 31st, a day off, but I still woke up at 6:30, wow I slept in a whole hour….got up to let Duchess out, feed her and Casey(our 11 year old Great Pyrenees, retired coyote hunter as she recently recovered about 80%, after having a stroke), then check on the cats (were at 5 of them), stand at the fence and count horses, for a while Duchess hasn’t been awake in the morning, it’s been taking a whistle and some day’s even a pet to get her up…

This morning it took a pet, then a bit of a shake, she looked up at me and I knew……she couldn’t stand up, I helped her up, waited hoping she would shake it off and walk outside, she stumbled and I picked her up, carried her outside, set her in the grass and laid down beside her…she drifted back to sleep….
I sat there for a couple hours, watching her, reminiscing of all the things we’ve been through and done, knowing what I had to do, not wanting to do it, and hoping she would wake up and go for her walk….I woke up my wife, called the kids to come over and called the vet…

As we were all sitting there waiting for the time to take Duchess for her last truck ride, my daughter got up and went into the house, her 5 month old was sitting in her stroller, Emma started to cry….Duchess woke up and tried desperately to get up, I’ve never heard the sounds she made in her attempts to get up, I helped her stand, carried her weight and she wobbled over towards Emma, when she realized she couldn’t get to her, she barked a couple times and laid down….our family protector to her last breath….

I picked her up, walked around her out to the horses, then once around the house….

She is laid to rest on our farm, not just a pet, she was part of our family….RIP

Sorry for your loss.... that's gotta be tough. I will face the same situation sooner than later. Our mutt is 13 and our Pyrenees is 11. Mickey (the mutt) is getting deaf/blind/slow/sore, when the bad days outnumber the good I will put her down, I won't let her suffer. That will be a rough day.

That's a hard thing to take losing a family member like that! I grew up on a farm and didn't / couldn't get attracted to pets didn't take much for them to get taught a "lesson". Now this might take my man card away but I couldn't imagine not having my cat Shmams come greet me at the door at nights when I get home from work. He is the only one that is happy to see me lol

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it was for my parents to put down their dog, and after almost losing my cat and the month of her struggling it only hits home harder. Your dog looked very loved and happy and you do know, all dogs go to heaven. :)

I thought I was the one comforting her when this picture was taken, but truth be told I think she was comforting me.

I know when I was carrying Duchess on her last walk around the house, she was barely holding her head up, yet she found the strength to lift her head and look at me, then when she brought her head down, she licked my arm, just once and laid her head back onto my arm....

She knew I was hurting....

This is the same dog over the years that couldn't sit still, but when I hurt my back and was laid up in bed, she would sneak up onto the bed and lay beside me....

Give your heart to an animal and they will show you the meaning of Love....
