Just an fyi, BC government have implemented a new law that you cannot have more than 1 jerry can empty or full in your vehicle to board the ferry. You are allowed 2 in the trailer or vehicle you are towing. Came across this morning and BC ferry lady almost got slaughtered over this. A truck behind me had 2 dirt bikes in the box and each had a jerry can, they would not let them on, i took one of his cans in the back of my suv. There was a pile getting others to haul the cans across. Be a pain going to trout lake to ride.

Really, that's crazy

There's nothing out there for gas, what happens if a guy needs race fuel for his ride

Buddy along side of us was towing a jeep, it had 3 old empty steel jerry cans mounted to the body, he said he has never used them and were only on there because it is rusted behind them. He had to remove one and put it in his camper. Safety issue, she pulled out the sheet and went through it with us. Totally unbelievable.

I talked to the ferry guy while waiting for the ferry about that. In his words they look for red cans, if your gas happens to be in yellow cans you are good to go. Its considered diesel and not expolsive. They dont look past the point of color. That was the upper arrow ferry.

This was this morning, crossed at 11:30 from Gelena, yes she was hunting red cans, found lots, bikers can was orange and was busted. I run clear ones so would imagine they will bust me with them

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

I remember a few years back when we had 2 extra propane tanks in the box of the truck. 1 for cook stove and the other for the BBQ. We had to get a guy to take 1 across in his truck for us as we were only allowed 1 extra with the the 2 in the 5th wheel.
I have attached a link on this.
Caution if you are hauling a slip tank of gasoline also. It must be tied into the fuel system or no go if I am reading the rules correctly.

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

I came across that ferry from both directions this summer and the lady just asked me on the revelstoke side if I had jerrycans which I said no (small fib) never made me open my tailgate to check and nobody asked at all on the other side coming back.

Super dumb if they are empty and they give you grief. What’s going to happen to it in your shut off truck on a 25min ferry ride that didn’t happen on a how many hour drive???Your crossing a giant river, not the inside passage.

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

I was coming back from Vancouver island a few years ago with 8 jerry can, 6 were empty. They made me fill the empty can with water and I had to put the fuel from the can in the boat. Then fill the other two with water as well. We go up north island and fuel is an issue.

Now I hide them in my cuddy Or put them in the camper... Out of sight, out of mind.

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

I have been on that ferry over 300 times, many of them were with a tidy tank full of gas...slap a 1202 ( diesel) decal on it, and they will never know. Others i know use blue jerry cans and tell them its their water...discussion ends there.
If you have a sled deck just slide the cans under it, or if an enclosed trailer lock them in it.
They only look for the obvious, don't do a deep search.

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

So reading this correctly we are not allowed our jerrycans on the sleds when crossing the ferry?

All i can say when we crossed there was an attendant hassling everyone for having gerry cans, a bunch of people stepped in and we split up the fuel tanks to get everyone across, was a joke but happened. Just a word to be cautious and maybe don’t over reveal

Right, what is it honestly coming too! Like we used to smuggle guys into the drive-in theatre in the trunk so I’m sure we’ll figure out a way to get extra gas across ferry

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

There is a dude on the Crawford side that will talk and educate if he finds extra propane or jerry cans. This is the guy who organized the line-up. I had a small 5# propane bottle kind of tucked in with my blocks for the trailer which were in the back of my truck. Sort of hidden but out of the way. He put the tape on the valve and let it pass. He told me the workers are paranoid about an explosion on the ferry and it is absolutely crazy how they are handling it. What difference does it make if I come up with 5 jerry cans and distribute them among 4 other vehicles? There are still 5 jerry cans on the ferry. I personally think it is just another hassle from the green element regarding motorized transportation in the back country.

When I came across with our move we were loaded to the nuts and pulling the trailer. Unknown to them there were 8 jerry cans and 3 20# propane tanks in with the stuff in the back of my truck. Out of sight, out of mind.

Re: Shelter bay / gelena bay ferry

I went across upper arrow with the boat last summer. They were grilling me on portable fuel containers even though all there is on my boat is the on-board fuel tank.
