Anyone using them for home / auto. Was just doing some online quotes, and it looks like I could save a couple hundred bucks per month by switching over to them. We're currently all over the place between Wawanesa, Aviva, and Intact, but neither of them even come close even with everything bundled together.

Judt trying to do my homework before making the change.

I have never heard of sgi. I wouldn’t touch wawaneesa with a 10’ pole. I have dealings with them on both sides of the coin now.

SGI is Saskatchewan Government Insurance. Looks like they provide coverage all over now.

My wife has been with Wawanesa forever, so we just stuck with them when we bought her new car. But the rates just seem to creep up and up. Same with my truck and toys through Intact, and my house through Aviva.

SGI Canada is SGI (Saskatchewan’s Government Insurance Plans) foray in selling in other provinces.

I am in the insurance industry and I have all of my stuff between Intact and Aviva.

Most insurance companies that do business in Alberta are trying to get rate increases on their portfolios. So what might be cheap this year, may be a different story next year. Intact is seeming to be the most stable over time.
Good information, thanks.

The differences in price I was quoted was pretty substantial. Almost a 40% discount on auto and 50% on home. Was just wondering what the catch was.

SGI is legalized criminals. Talk to any person who has had to make a claim through them, and it will be nothing but problems.

Well said ippielb, couldn't agree more.

Key word "Government" insurance, that should tell you right there it's not going to work out well when you need it.

Thanks for the insight guys. Perhaps we'll stick with intact, and just try to get everything on one account for better discounts.

I would use some of SGI's pricing as leverage to get some better pricing if it is in fact the same coverage. I have found that one really needs to go through the fine print with SGI as most times it's similar coverage but not the same.

I use Intact for everything now, business included. I was using wawanesa for the house but had a minor claim with them that turned into a chit show and far more of a headache than needed.

I have not had to make a claim with Intact however so I cannot speak on that part.

Peace Hills did the same thing in Saskatchewan a few years back. Had my house with them because they were drastically less money for the same coverage, then the next year was a completely different story.

TD Insurance has vary competitive rates. I made a claim on our hard wood floor when the ice maker in the fridge went had water all over the floor.Had no issue at all with my claim. Just saying might be worth a call .

Sgi is a joke fought all summer with them over our flipped pontoon in a storm, boat cost 100gs had 9 hours on it n sgi offered 56 for it and didnt no jack ****

We had a truck that was written off and had the same dealings.
Basically 50% of what it was worth is what they were offering.

Find a compariable truck and they would say it was not the same.
It went as far as it was not the same paint. BULL****!

Hard to contact our rep. Lots of messages left and no response.

Due to us having other vehicles to drive we just stopped answering there calls and e-mails also.
Funny how they start to get excited when you do that and time passes as they have to settle the claim.

I understand that most folks cant do that.

Once the policy runs out they can shove there insurance up there ass!

Finally settled on the original appraisels from dealer and vehicles we found online.
Amazing! this is were we started and they just nicleled and dimed there way up.

Good luck with your claim! you have a long road to fight for your money.

Have been with wawanesa and cooperators for ever, just got a quote on everything thru Costco. Substantial savings. Haven't switched yet , but I think I'm going to.

I’m in the insurance industry as well- and work with Juicecan.

Hers my my two cents:

-Lots of changes going on in the marketplace right now. You will always have ‘cheap’ rates somewhere. Eventually the market corrects itself and they have to come up closer to the market average. Comsistent small increases over time is all you can ask for. Remember inflation applies to everything.
-SGI is cheap for a reason. I deal with them on a commercial level and would never personally insure with them myself. I’ve told many clients this.
-New boats, snowmobiles, rv’s, and vehicles can have depreciation waivers applied. This prevents the value argument from happening. Do your homework.
-We insure our sleds with Intact. They cover gear and accessories for $5000 on each sled. This includes anything I add to my sled and my entire gear bag. Let’s pretend it went missing from my hotel room. Saves you from having to make a claim under your home otherwise. I may be a little light on the limit but figured I’m fine to self insure past this.
-We insure our 5th wheel with Aviva. In my opinion they have the best product. Plus, it’s a separate policy so claims there won’t effect my other policies. They have a long standing product in the marketplace and have been the leader here for a long time. They offer up to 10 years full replacement coverage on trailers.
-Our boat is insured with Premier Marine. It should NOT just be added to your home policy. Again this is a separate policy, plus separate water liability (our home umbrella sits over this as well), pollution coverage if I sink the thing, and $10,000 for gear and accessories including when the gear is removed from the boat sitting at the lake lot. They also cover freezing (typically excluded) provided you have a invoice for winterizarion (I use Martins) and cover rodent/Vermon damage (also excluded usually) if a rat, muskrat, or mouse got in my boat. I also have a agreed upon value for my boat in the event of a total loss (2008 Mastercraft X-2).

I am going through the process right now. I agree a lot of changes in the insurance market at the moment. I had all my insurance through Aviva but my broker was no longer working with them. Aviva would not let me transfer my policies to another broker. They wanted me to re-apply and as such I lost some of the discounts I had enjoyed previously. The home and auto insurance through Aviva was reasonably priced previously but would have went up about 15% in addition to higher deductibles. Aviva also now wants all the $ up front and no longer will take payments.

Broker proposed moving me to SGI instead of Aviva. Before my policy would have even taken place I got a letter in the mail about a claim I submitted in Kindersley with a SK plate number. I called in to inquire and they said I had to prove that it wasn't me and that that plate didn't belong to me, despite the fact that I have lived in Alberta for 20 years and haven't had SGI insurance since 1998. I ended up having to file a privacy complaint to get any traction with them to resolve it. It turns out there is someone in Kindersley with the same name and birth date as mine and our accounts somehow got merged mistakenly. So I really had no desire to keep my business with them.

For RVs, I agree the Aviva insurance is pretty good.

As for home and Auto here is what I have found:

Allstate - The cheapest for both home and auto by several hundred $ than the next cheapest. I have a coworker who uses them and they said claims were handled well.

Aviva - Ok prices but they no longer was payment plans. Brokers seem to think they might be trying downsizing their Canadian business

Royal Sun - Ok prices but higher deductibles for wind/hail on the house

TD - Home was cheaper. Autos slightly higher than the rest. They were probably 30% cheaper for ATVs though.

AMA - quite a bit higher for both auto and home.

Intact - Stupid prices for both home and auto

I did't know Costco did insurance so I might have to check them out.

90% of how satisfied you are with a claim depends on the adjuster you get and this is a crap shoot as depends who is available when your claim is assigned. Sometimes an inexperienced adjuster works in your favour and sometimes against. This applies to ALL insurance companies.

Aviva is having some issues for now. They will get through it though. After continuously having an RV insured with Elite (Aviva's RV arm), we left them in 2014 as they changed the coverage and tried to insure it like a house which obviously it is not. Moved to Echelon for that which was about half the cost and supplied coverage similar to what Aviva did pre 2014. No idea if that issue (several actually) is fixed but I have moved on.

Costco is selling insurance so is sort of like a broker. Go on their website and you will see a list of insurers. Costco is good at some things but extensive customer service isn't one of them. If they cannot just replace the item, they really have nothing else and if there is a problem with a claim, I can't see customer service being very helpful.
