Savage Hunting Rifles

Anyone have any feed back on Savage bolt action hunting rifles in the larger calibres ( say 7 mm mag and 300 Win Mag or related ) . Apparently some Savage rifles are Canadaian made and are good value for the $$$ ( So I have been told).

Savage IMO is making some out of the best out of the box rifles, Stevens is even cheaper.

i bought the outta the box 7mm mag 3yrs ago now. love it was under 5 bills for a ready to hunt rifle just had to sight it in. Dudleys in drayton valley bore sighted it for me when i picked it up and then i did the rest at the range. came with a 3x9x40 simmons scope. i figured the scope may last 1 box of shells maybe 2 at most i am just finising up the third box and it still shoots great. excellant value for the money spent imo.

i've heard the samething best outta the box,just depends on the price and a Savage compared to another brand and if comes with scope.
I looked at a Savage and for the price i bought a .270 Tikka for $600,love the gun smooth quiet action.You might wanna go check them out and maybe adding $100-$200 might be a better deal.
Walking out i think cost me $900,$600 rifle,$225 scope and rings, $50 strap, plus a guns case,shells.

I looked at a Tikka T3 Left handed 7mm Mag synthetic stock with satin steel barrel and it was $990 with no scope, mounts. sling or anything. I would love a Tikka but I wonder about the $$$$ value for the 1 week a year I hunt. I know you get what you pay for but I struggle with extra $400.

before i bought my rifle i checked it out alot. i found a copy of field and stream i believe it was that tested a bunch of different rifles from various manufacturers. i believe it was 25 manufacturers. was quite suprised by the results. the higher end $ wise rifles where far less accurate than the midrange to lower priced ones. all rifles were chambered in 270 if i remember right and shooting at 250yrds. the marlin was most accurate with a <.5" group the tika was around 1.75" and i believe it was a sako that was the worst at barely under 3" pretty chittty for a 2000.00 dollar rifle imo. the savage was midrange at around 1" or so. if you are interested i could try to find the copy for you and mail it to ya. i found it helpful when picking a rifle. like you said hard to justify the big money for 1 week a year. but during that week you wanna be confident that your 1 shot is a kill shot.

I did the exact same thing. I find it's really light too. Although I did come from a 6mm with a walnut stock.... That really sucked!

Does anyone know of anybody who is really good at restoring guns? I really don't know a whole lot about about guns but I do have a few sitting around. A couple need a little love like the 303 savage and the 30-30 just needs a good polishing. The shot gun is good though.

Try K S Arms in south side Edmonton ( South of Argyll and 91 st area) and I hear that there is a good gunsmith in Bently Alberta but he is very busy so it may take a while

WOW..i just looked at Wholesale Sports and that is the T3 lite i have exactly and i got mine for $600 about 4yrs ago.That is crazy now $860,i totally understand now about spending the extra money for 1 week of hunting.Spend within your means.

imo savage doesnt make the best rifle but what i will give them credit for is their trigger,,,that accutrigger is one of the best out, you can dial some of them right down to a six ounce pull if i recall correctly.

I own a lot of different rifles including sako tikka Remington winchester savage and Thompson center. By far my favourite rifle is the Remington model 700 for accuracy and fit and finish. The savages are nice rifles mine is in the weather warrior series 300wsm the trigger is nice but in the end out of all the rifles I own I prefer the Remington or tikka the Remington model 700 in the sps is a little cheaper but still has the great action as the higher priced xcr and bdl models worth taking a look At in my opinion

i agree the rem. 700 series is an awesome rifle. only reason i did the savage over the 700 rem was the price difference. for less than just the rifle i got a scope and rings mounted and bore sighted.

not to drop a duece on anyones parade but i worked at a gun counter for a few years and by far and i mean far remington had the most warranty work done on them and the least happiest customer outta all the bigger brands, so just be weary buying a remington as well.

That is hard to believe for me personaly cause I have four model 700 remingtons and have never had a problem with any of them you might be thinking the model 710 wich is the model 770 now they are a pos in my opinion very cheap and you definetly get what you pay for with them no matter what you choose if your using it for one week a year of hunting you shouldn't be disapointed just stay away from the bottom models such as the Stevens and model 770 and such

I checked out a few places regarding the Savage and they alll ( for the most part ) had good things to say about savage. The problem I having is to find a Left Hand bolt. I am think that I am going to take a right hand bolt gun and shoot from my left shoulder. Provided that the gun does not have a cheak piece on the stock - I will just have to cycle the bolt with my right hand ( switch hands to cycle the bolt - slight hassle but I can manage) . It there anything else that I am missing with this train of thought ? I am a right hand person but my dominate eye is my left eye.

lots of people actually do that but if you go to wholesale sports in edmonton and i think they have two now theyll definatly be able to set you up with a left handed bolt

I was at Wholesale on wednesday and they had a Tikka. It was nice and I was tempted but I am still going to look around .
