400 bucks. If interested I will make sure the battery still holds a charge and post a pic
Definitely interested, just reading up on Iridium right now. Appears different phones have access to different sats.

How old is this phone?

Bought it used in 2010. Probably doesn't have 100 minutes of use on it.

Went with an in-reach. Looked into the sat phone last year and I just missed the rebate so the cost was $550 for the phone then the monthly plan. I will say I have a business but I like the options and plans of the new in-reach and there was way more options having it be a gps. I paid the same for the in-reach as the sat phone but the monthly plans were better. Preloaded messages and texting is great. Using the app for your cell phone is the best. Hope this helps.

Cheers

Anybody buy one of these little guys yet? If they work it sure looks like the ticket

I looked into them a few years ago. They are extremely slow. 2400bps essentially dial up speed of the early 90's. You would essentially be able to send text emails any type of other content would take forever to transmit.

The iridium network is far superior to the GlobalStar network as they use a grid of Geo Stationary satellites that cover almost the entire surface of the earth. Global star uses a smaller network of moving satellites that run a criss cross pattern focusing on North America. There are times when you have to wait for a satellite to come into view before you can make a call- usually its a couple of minutes from what I've found.

So here is what they came up with. You guys tell me if this is good or not.

Globalstar has offered a discounted rate plan for your club/members if you purchase through Caltronics. The details of the plan follow as I have cut/pasted their response:

Universal 780
$780/year
780 minutes/year
$0.99 per additional minute
$72/year additional for Voice Mail

This plan is not advertised and not available to the general public, it is $180 less than the advertised entry level plan . The Snowmobile club can only get this plan through Caltronics.

This offer is available up until March 31, 2018 after which point we can review to see if it should be extended or offer something the following winter.

A Globalstar handset is $499

Alternatively as I mentioned, you could do a pre-paid option from Infosat on the Iridium network which would cost $355 for 200 minutes (In Canada or Alaska only) good for 6 months which should cover the bulk of a club members sledding season. The Iridium handsets are more expensive however and are $1430 or $1599 depending on the model chosen.

I went with the basic plan. $47/month. For the first month to try it out. Had some friends sheep hunting. They sent me a created text, it comes with there exact location (like I can see the tree there standing beside exact) location. I spend lots of time in the bush so I figured we would give it a try. They must be getting popular though cause I was on a waiting list here in grande prairie. It’s the top of the line in-reach so we will see what it does this sledding season.

Cheers

"We have applied a 27% discount to your account your renewal for the 780 Plan. Your renewal would be December 5, 2017."

Globalstar^

So the trick is to call in asknis they have any smaller plans cause non of the big ones fit your needs and then when they say no say you are switching to the the Irridium Northern lights 200 prepaid plan for $325.

Then they basically will match it but for a 12 month term.

So right now I am 780 min for $609+ tax

Well this year was my best performance yet.

$450 CAD all in for 780min.

I guess you can remove voicemail now too, which saved a bunch.

Did you have to call in and threaten to leave? That price is getting more reasonable. I still might do the inreach though.

Yeah every year, which is getting old.

The first person I talked to can't offer you anything.

But the next person they escalate you to once you say you would like to cancel your account can negotiate.

So when you talk to the first person.
Ask what your rate is for the upcoming year.

Say you can't afford that and that you would like to cancel.

Then she will transfer you up a level.

Say you can't afford their services and are switching to the Irridium $300 plan for 200 min.

Then you will go back and forth a couple times and finally arrive at about 60% off.

And yeah.
