This came up at the local club meeting outside with a few guys. I have invited a pretty big name in our sport to come ride our area this spring during the best riding IMO in the Kakwa area and to my surprise they accepted the offer pending on planning and timing as they are really busy but also very interested in our area. As many of you know the swan city snowmobile club has a pretty great relationship with SRD in AB and BC so we are given the opportunity to put in temporary winter camps in our riding area as well as groom the trail as long as we as a club continue to operate as we do with maintenance of the area and clean up efforts etc. When I explained the situation I had a few members get all yappy about this ruining the riding area, possibly bringing more riders to the area, maybe leading to closures etc. I was somewhat irritated at the time but after a few days thought I can somewhat see where their point of view comes from although still think if anything this will only be good. My thoughts are as such: exposure to our area and the quality in which we as a club maintain it should be good exposure as the area is very well looked after with clean ups/designated camp spots/good standing relationship with SRD, more riders mean more pounded out trail but also leads to more income to our club which could be put forth for extra grooming, I get nobody wants to be overcrowded but our location isn't like anywhere else where it's just off the main road, you pound down over 100km of dicey gravel logging road to the staging/camp area then ride 34km to any decent riding and it gets better the further you ride back in so a fair amount of desire must be put into riding the area in the first place. Personally I don't think having a big name come up will do anything but give them a few fun days in an area they've never seen or heard of, but just for arguments sake what are your opinions?

yeah, I don't think you have to worry about crowding or over exposure out there. takes a bit of commitment to ride out there, day trips are somewhat prohibitive if you want to see a lot of area without riding your bag off. I have run into both ends of the spectrum of guys that ride Kakwa, some are more than inviting and others act as if it's their own spot and don't want anyone else out there.

Can't see it being a problem out there to much mob to ride.

Kinda my thoughts, it's a huge area and even if it brought exposure I'd think it'd be a good image of sledding in general, you definitely meet a lot of douchebags out there, usually the guys pounding beer at the cabin or bottom of hills bragging how cool they are on their mods doing nothing;)

you guys have a unique thing going on out there, well managed and under heavy scrutiny. I go and ride with my buddy Shane out there every spring. he and some other weyerhauser guys have a decent little camp, not quite as fancy as some but it's warm....lol.

The camps are pretty sweet, tents to cabins, we have a renovated atco shack that's pretty sweet, great riding if you can stand the trail though

man, it was the best I have ever seen it this last spring. I have an ASA membership but paid trail fees anyways, it was worth it for that ride in and out every day.

It's already overcrowded. I stopped going because of that, and the fact that there's too many guys drinking beer and riding. Funny, considering the heavy police force that ride almost every weekend. Enough to give them there own cabin at the lake. Seems like there's alot of people who think they own the place too. I don't mind paying the fees, but when the trail in is rougher then he'll, and too icy to turn, makes it tough to swallow. Especially when there is a rude "volunteer" demanding money before my sleds even uploaded. Just saying...

The volunteers are generally good lately but you have a few wannabe cops in there that get irritating to deal with....I just fly by if I'm not in the mood to deal with the one tard that gets under my skin, overcrowding is a problem everywhere if you don't have a good grasp of the area, I've never had to share a riding area out there yet but we all know the area pretty good and have secret spots we tend to stay too, the cabin is best avoided, usually filled with retards in and out, not much outta the ordinary anywhere though, much nicer area if you have a camp though, I couldn't go back to day tripping anymore, we try and go mid week, weekends start good but by Sunday night pre grooming it gets pretty gross coming home

I certainly hope it's better. I've never known anyone who actually had a camp, so day trips is a norm for me. Always up for new riding friends, let me know if anyone in the area is up for a new guy to join the odd weekend. I usually ride tumbler, and red deer. I ride a turbo pro, so I'm not a trail guy.

The little exposure you'll get from anyone coming up to enjoy a ride will be pretty minimal if any. Most spokesman or promoters are going to be talking about their products rather than where they just rode last weekend. It'd be different if it was a magazine editor but it's not.

If you really want to limit the exposure.... stop groomin g the d#mn trail. There will be a ton less exposure/closures/people/litter/drunk riders out in Kakwa if the trail wasn't groomed. There would be so many less asshats out there because they won't ride a bumpy trail. And that much more untouched pow pow for me.

But on the plus side it keeps all those asshats there and out of the other play areas that I'm starting to enjoy. The whole idea of camps used to be to beat the trail. Now it's "Let's make this as easy as we can so every newfie and his dog can have a camp out in Kakwa right side by side so we can all walk around drinking and camp hopping and we'll never have to even fire our rainblow wedges up"

The glory days of Kakwa are gone with bordertown. It still befuddles me why anyone would want a camp in the d@mn parking lot. You still have to ride the whole friggin trail smooth or not. Agh I hate Kakwa and the people there. You can keep them. We've been broke down, tow bumpers wrecked halfway back and watched 100-200 people sled by without stopping to help. Just last year I nose dived into a creek with just my girlfriend and I and a group of 12 people roll up, stop 30 meters away, watch me dig for 15 minutes then take off. The groomer brought out the best douchebags of GP into Kakwa.

Nope one little american that we don't even know his name isn't going to affect the douchebagness of Kakwa.

x1000!!

i dont think you bringing in a pro is going to change anything. id actually be embarrased to bring a pro there. nice scenic drive into the mountains only to end up in a parking lot with 180 make shift cabins/buses/tents, drunks strewn about, beer cans everywhere, then a tore up long ass trail to some ok riding, stop at the cabin only to see 50 sleds with people chirping how deadly they are smashing drinks, ride the beat trail back to a shack dodging drunks, hit the hay after a long ass day only to be awaken every hour by a BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP and people yelling. got a few buds that have buses/cabins and they debate every year about going out there.

last time i was there (2 seasons ago) i was nearly killed by some drunken loser on the trail. mm's from a hit. then that night some drunk decided to go for a rip...slammed into the back of a truck..had to jack the truck up to get the sled out...they thought it was funny??? i will never ride there again...it is WAY crowded with ok riding. makes no sense. take this pro to Wolverine, PK, Beaver creek, Hassler, Upper burnt....far better ridin with 1/10th the fawktards

on second thought.....disregard everything i just said....we dont need any of those tards coming out where we ride...lol

hey, nothing against you tantrum...at all. just a rant..LMAO:beer:

The only problem with Beaver creek and Powder king is coming back to your truck with your window smashed out and your sh!t stolen... I can ride Kakwa all day and leave my super clamps laying on my deck, when I come back and the end of the day they are still there.

They could be "all drunks out there" but at least they aren't druken theives!!!!

Definitely plan on visiting a few other spots, I'm just a fan of kakwa, drunks are everywhere but I avoid the cabin at all costs for that reason, thanks for all the responses

Snowest did an issue highlighting Kakwa years ago and it never increased the amount of people coming to Kakwa, I wouldn't worry about bringing out some "Allstar".

If those "pro" guys are serious about coming to Kakwa in the future they would be better off coming in from the Mcbride side anyways. That way they could stay in a hotel in Mcbride and have a bunch of other areas to ride as a plan B if Kakwa didn't work out for them.

As far as the folks drinking and smoking it up... It may not be for you or me but those people are everywhere. To some driving all the way to the cabin just to get high/stoned/drunk then driving all the way back home may be the highlight of their week... I hardly see it because we are generally first ones in and last ones out.
