Rebuild or part out 2nd gen Cummins

I blew the headgasket on my cummins and the head is trashed. It also has is going to need the cylinders honed and new rings and pistons probably since it has been overheated and seen high egts. The shop quoted me about $6000 for new head, pistons and crank bearings. The truck has about 600000kms and is rusty but I just got the transmission fully built about 5 years ago and put about $8000 into it, rebuilt the diff and put a new mishimoto rad and a steedspeed exhaust manifold. Not sure if I should cut my losses and part it out or if I'm in deep enough I should just spend the money and rebuild it?

swap in a used long block or buy a nicer one and move your go fast parts over and part the rest.

A guy I work with is in a similar predicament at 400k it was bleeding him more than a monthly truck payment so he had to call it quits and go new again. One thing after another

Yep best bet is to go talk to your dodge dealer

After spending another $6 K you would still have a rusted out old Dodge. After 600K I would definitely reload.

Thanks for the advice. I might tow it home and then watch kijiji for a nicer one that needs a transmission or something. Not sure if I even need a diesel anymore anyways.

Our needs and wants change over the years so you might not need a diesel anymore. Doesn't look like this one owes you anything
