Re: Sled Repairs??

I HAVE A DILEMNA!!!
I JUST PRICED OUT THE PARTS TO REPAIR THE 1000RT THAT SNAGGED A SNOW SNAKE(ROCK) ON THE FRONT END. TO ABSOLUTELY FIX EVERYTHING THAT IS BENT/BROKEN INCLUDING A DENTED EXHAUST PIPE COVER($250.97) AND PUT IT BACK TO SHOWROOM IS WILL BE ABOUT $1000.00 + TAX.
QUESTION IS: DO YOU FIX ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING, OR TAP OUT THE DENT IN THE EXHAUST PIPE COVER AND STRAIGHTEN THE FRONT X-BRACE AND PUT ON A CLEAR HOOD, OR FIX IT ALL WITH NEW PARTS. ALSO SHOULD IT BE DONE THROUGH INSURANCE???  HOW FAR SHOULD ONE GO?? I CAN DOO ALL THE WORK MYSELF, SO THATS NOT A PROBLEM, BUT SHOULD EVERY LITTLE SCRATCH/SCRAPE/DENT BE REPAIRED/REPLACED??

Not if you plan to ride that machine for a year or two because as soon as you spend the $$ to repair you will bang it up again. For resale I would fix it. Barry

SORRY GLEN, NEVER FLEW:nono: , ACTUALLY I WAS ALMOST TO A STOP AND IT DROPPED DOWN INTO THE ROCK. NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, JUST PANELS AND BRACKETS, AND PRIDE:( . COULDN'T GET OUT OF THE TRACK(ICE) THAT I GOT STUCK INTO SLIDING DOWNHILL, AND ALMOST CAME TO A STOP WHEN IT DROPPED OVER THE EDGE. HATE TO SEE THE OTHER 2 SLEDS THAT WENT INTO THE ROCK:eek: (I GOT STUCK IN ONE OF THE PREVIOUS SLEDS RUT AND IT SUCKED ME RIGHT INTO THE ROCK). 1 OF THE TRACKS HAD THE SLED SLIDING SIDEWAYS TO TRY TO STOP, BUT I KNOW THERE WOULDA BEEN SEVERE CARNAGE ON THAT ONE:eek: . I ACTUALLY CARRY BLACK DUCT TAPE, AND RON HAD THE SILVER(SAID HE HAD TO PUT HIS MARK ON IT). KEEPING THE COLOR(I LIKE THE BLUE/BLACK), BUT MIGHT NOT PUT THE DECALS BACK ON.

Sorry to hear about your wreck,it's brand new this year eh?I hate when that happens. However a little characture is OK,once you get over that really bad feeling deep in you gut!Fix 'er to run and handle as new and leave the rest 'till you sell it.You'll likely scratch it some more and perhaps you'll ride even more aggresive and have more fun!

Should A Guy Put The Decals On The New Hood

WHEN TRACKING DOWN ALL THE PARTS I NEED, THE HOOD COMES STRAIGHT BLUE, SO SHOULD I PUT ALL THE DECALS BACK ON THE BLUE HOOD, OR LEAVE IT PURE BLUE?? ALSO SHOULD I PUT THE FOAM ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD, AND WHAT PURPOSE WOULD IT REALLY SERVE, OTHER THAN GETTING HEAVY WHEN IT SOAKS UP ALL THE WATER/SNOW???

sled repairs

Summitric, sorry to hear about your carnage. My sled received 1650.00 damage from my rollover. I have put it thru my insurance. It was a new sled ( 07 800XRS with 150 miles) and I would like to keep riding. By the way, I borrowed a 06 1000RT from a friend to ride in the St. Paul rally. I was blown away by the power and the track (162) Just fix it and keep ridin.

Man, that plastic just shatters when its cool out. A buddy of mine was bucked off then his sled, almost at a dead stop dropped into a tree well 3'. Broke the bumper, hood and belly pan. Later in his garage you could bend the hood in half and it wouldn't break. 600 clams later it's on the road again.
Summitric, it you have trouble finding RT parts, buddy found his at Vinny Clark's shop in Valemount, put them on the bus same day.

I just went through the same thing with mine. I rolled it down a hill. Estimated cost to repair to like new (hood, plus decals, headlight, plus other parts) was about $1600.
I figure if you can fix it so it looks pretty good without spending too much money then do that. I managed to fix it up so that unless you have it pointed out to you, you are un-likely to notice it (did this for around $400).

Unless you are just trail ridding and it's pretty un-likely you will ding it again I don't think it's worth fixing it to new. If you do fix it to new, and you ding it again, your gunna really be upset. As far as I am concerned sleds don't last terribly long anyway and they are ment to enjoy, not fuss too much about. You can always buy brand new parts for it at the time you re-sell it, if you are worried about resell. That way it will look really new and you won't have spent a lot of extra money on it. Doo charges far too much for parts anyway.

Also, if you are going to fix er up, call around to dealers/specialty shops and look for take off parts, harder to find but they are out there.

As far as insurance, I pay for and use insurance as little as possible. If you use insurance, it's likely to go up on you sooner or later, plus you have the deductible portion you still have to pay for yourself. Save the insurance for a complete write off.

Just my opinions of course
D

Summitric that is a drastrac way to put the big girl on a diet but whatever works. If you fix her back to show room the next rock , stump ,post , Ice clump, will bring out more pain. I realize that all plastic and rubber parts are consumables fix it so that we can't laught at you then ride it like you stole it. Chicks dig scars

Fixing The Big Blue

Yup, I Think I'll Fix 'er Up Without The Decals, And Maybe Dynoport Pipe It, And Leave It At That..... I'm Sure It Won't Be The First Scar. Parts Are Cheap, Looks Like About $400.00 Oughta Replace The Bellypan, Bumper Ass'y, Hood, Brace, Right Ski And Rivets Etc. --- Cheaper Than I Thought. Probably Wait A Little On The Control Arm ($358.00) Because Its A Little Pricey, And You Can't See Any Stress Marks On The Arm, But It Appears To Be About 1/2" Back Compared To The Other Side. Thanks For All The Input.;)

Fixing The Big Blue

I CHECKED IN WITH KEN @ SPECIALTY SLEDS AND HE HAD SOME "TAKE-OFF" PIECES ON CONSIGNMENT, BUT THE GUY DIDN'T WANT TO SEPERATE ALL THE PARTS, BUT KEN HAD "TAKE-OFF" CONTROL ARMS:) . SO, I HAVE DECIDED TO PUT ALL 4 "BLUE" CONTROL ARMS(INSTEAD OF BLACK) AND I GOT ALL 4 CHEAPER THAN WHAT I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT 1 CONTROL ARM FROM "DOO" FOR. SO I DECIDED WITH THE MONEY SAVED, I GOT FOOT PADS(FOR CLIMBING) AND ALSO "SPECIALTY SLEDS" TUNNEL SUPPORTS(ALL IN BLUE):D :D .

AND SO IT BEGINS:( .......... ORDERED A BLUE HOOD, AND STOCK BUMPER, SKI, BELLY PAN, GRILLE AND X-BRACE FROM MY DOO DEALER IN MILO. MY LITTLE 1000RT IS NOW SLOWLY BECOMING MODIFIED(MINOR WAYS), BUT IT WILL BE ALL FOR THE BETTER. NOT PUTTING ANY DECALS ETC ON IT FOR NOW(UNTIL RESALE TIME). SHOULD LOOK PRETTY COOL:cool: .

Hey get one of those cool firery paint jobs done. Some cool blue flames, subtle but there. Wasn't there a guy on here that did custom paint? You know once you start modding it just never ends. Sounds like you found some good deals on parts. You are fortunate that you dinged it up maybe:D ? How did that big rock manage to jump out in front of you anyway:confused: ? I don't think I heard that part of the story...

Here are some shots of Rics sled. The first is him nose first into the rock, looks like a snow bank, but it's a rock.
Second is the damage before duct tape and the third is added duct tape to get the old girl home.
Enjoy.

HEY 2003SUMMIT: YAH, I GUESS ITS BEGINNING AGAIN(THE MODDING PART -- JUST FINISHED MY 670X ECONO MOD A COUPLE YEARS AGO, COMPLETE WITH PURPLE LIGHTNING BOLTS ON THE BLACK HOOD - LOOKS AWESOME). I HAD TO BEAT A HIGHMARK(NOT OVERLY TALL MOUNTAINSIDE), AND ON THE WAY DOWN CAUGHT INTO A SNOW COVERED ICE RUT FROM ANOTHER SLED(OR 2) AND I TRIED EVERYTHING TO GET OUT OF IT(EXCEPT HITTING REVERSE) AND ALMOST CAME TO A STOP AND THEN IT DROPPED THE 6 OR 7 FEET OVER THE EDGE INTO THIS ROCK. 2 OR 3 OTHER SLEDS ALL DID THE SAME PREVIOUS TO MINE(THERE WERE SEVERAL SLED MARKS DOWN INTO THIS SAME ROCK), AND THERE WAS ALREADY SOME CARNAGE PIECES THERE. I SUSPECT ITS PART OF A WATERFALL OR SPRING OFF THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN THERE. NORMALLY THIS ROCK IS COVERED WITH SNOW ON THE UPHILL SIDE, AND IT IS JUMPABLE, BUT LOOKS LIKE ITS BEEN WINDBLOWN FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND THE UPHILL SIDE HAD A 7 - 8FT DROP INTO THE ROCK.......... THATS THE STORY.
