RCMP in parking lots

Question: How Is it not illegal search or carding, if rcmp are going around asking folks in the parking lot for id, registration and insurance?
I thought the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms prevents unlawful searches (carding) unless suspected of a crime?

How is it any different than if they came up to you in Costco parking lot in Sherwood park and demanded the same ?

I think they have the right to ask for those items anywhere. If they didn't checkstops and road side stops would have been challenged long ago?

I’m all for checking for insurance and registration keeps the stolen gear in check. I’m not for bs tickets for law abiding citizens.

Someone planted and detonated a bomb in a fellow Sledders motor home a few years back in Brandywine parking lot. Afaik it was never solved. The victim didn’t die but the motor home was ruined. He bought another one. Sadly, he was shot and killed later on in Mexico.
I have been pulled over leaving the parking lot at the end of the day. It felt like he didn’t really care as I am older and didn’t seem drunk or stoned. He asked some bs questions and kinda blew me off.
I think if your all up to date on regi and stuff, you prolly have no problem with it.
Now if someone wants to challenge the authorities on the subject, I’m all for that also.

the sled club may have asked them to patrol? i'm for the patrols, stops a lot of stolen sleds and gear.

If they do find a stolen truck or sled. Good on them.
If you get ticketed for no papers or being intoxicated. Thats a you problem.

I've been checked many times. And only once was I riding with no insurance or registration. So a fine I deserved. I Knew the risks and went out anyway. Lesson learned

I agree with the presence and rcmp running vins and plates on what they can see only. I’m all for people not stealing other peoples stuff.

I think some folks are taking my intent wrong.
My point is, if rcmp walk up to me and ask for id without committing a crime, I don’t legally have to provide nor would I. It’s my right not to

I’m not a fan of this either as I don’t run plates on my sleds. Being from Sk I think it’s $ 150 ish for a plate. Most of that cost is the Sk trail fee. Why should I be forced to pay the trail fee if I’m never riding in Sk. I do have liability, fire and theft on all machines I take out to the hills.
I’m ok with running vins and checking to see if ppl should not be driving but it annoys me that I can get fined for not having a Sk trail permit in B.C.

I don’t think it’s a big deal, a question is asked, a ID card is shown. No different than getting asked for ID anywhere else, but I have nothing to hide either.
In my experience, “attitude makes the difference” when talking to the RCMP.

I believe plates are 185 in Sask now and they only come with 200 000 of liability,
sux that some guys are a holes

Registration is mandatory in BC. As long as you are registered in your home province that is all that's required. Don't whine about being fined for breaking the law.
