I can see benefits of both

Out here most trails fit at least Ranger 950xp ish width main reason for that is the people who usually clean these trails up are driving rangers lol with chainsaws etc so the trail fits basically whoever maintains it.

So the trail size argument is becoming less and less.

I do like smaller machines when choosing mud lane's however, The wider the UTV the larger chance you're going into the hole rather than skirting it.

I've seen even 800 rzr's go around holes (on the edge) that the Rangers and RZR 1000's had to essentially go through I've seen 800 rzr's go through tight bush better aswell.

I have always been impressed with how all these UTV's can climb out of holes though even ones with berms at the end that some Quads have issues coming out of.

Wider machines are always going to be more stable on hills etc but not as nimble so take your pick really.

Wider machines have larger potential to ride higher also.

Im always more concerned with weight myself those weight #'s keep going up every single year.

You know a Jeep TJ weighs about 3000 lbs (curb)
And Suzuki Samurai weighs about 2000 lbs (curb).

And most of these 900+ CC UTV's are anywhere from 1300-1500lbs dry currently.

They are steadily approaching Jeep / Samurai territory in alot of ways.

Most of the time in a utv,if you try to skirt it on the sides of a big mud hole, this is what is most likly to happen .
A: you will just slide in to the hole ,off camber anyways....
B: you will end up on your side or roof....
C: you will get stuck because you are only on 2 wheels....
D: you will break an axle because you are putting all the stress/torque on those 2 wheels...
E: you will be known as the camp idiot , for a while
F: your friends will spend hours wrecking their machines towing you out.....
G: all of the above!

Go down the centre,it's way easier.....don't be THAT GUY ....!!

Funny

I ride with tons of people and the people we pull out the least are the ones who look for alternate routes or skirt holes as best that they can.

Do they even have skeg holes in the east? not to be rude but sometimes i wonder about some of the replies i see.

I've yet to see anyone dumb enough to end up on their roof except 1 time where someone slipped off a crappy bridge.
Axle breakage mostly is when people are spinning like mad men and hit roots or burms and the wheels stop suddenly.
Why would you call someone a camp idiot for avoiding dumb things that slow down the group?
Who wreaks machines to pull others out? Winch+snatch blocks = easy mode.

Our big SxS are all so heavy now it's certainly not like pulling a quad out of a mess. I know my 4 seater is at 2000lbs with add ons and gear. The three times I've got stuck over the past couple years required some serious help to get me out (although a good rearwinch set up would have done the trick all three times) tried going between a large mud hole and deep ruts and just slid into the mud hole sinking my passenger side up to the seat, going through long grass and fell into a 3 foot hole nose down leaving my rear tires up in the air (had to leave it in the bush overnight and come back with a few friends and some good redneck engineering) and in the middle of a field in Bruderheim I hit some horrible mud and just sunk my front end in. I know I'm on the heavier side but I'm guessing any of the big CC machines would encounter the same problems.

Side by sides are already heavy, whats a few more pounds. Throw a 8000lbs winch on it, good to go. Single line pull out of anything.

That's what I'd do, if I ever buy another one.

I almost bought a rear hitch mount winch set up this year. The front winch gets its fair share of use and has held up well although I did change out my old beat up stock cable for a synthetic line this year but being able to pull myself out of a bad situation backwards would be wonderful. If/when I get this figured out it will definitely be with something stronger as well.

Yeah rear winch is a good idea too. Real easy to build a receiver hitch setup if you have the tools or friends with tool or some chit.

Just weld a steel plate on a ball mount, then drill holes. Build it for like 40$

I found with a rope winch line to pull it out and dry it.

It will rot in the drum and break when used.

Yeah these synthetic lines need a little tlc but I don't have a problem with that. When it gets dirty I just wash it in a pail with a little dish soap then let it dry before winding it back in.

Best thing with the rear winch is pulling someone out, it's too hard on machines in reverse and holding - winching

There are a few times when winching if I can't hold with my brakes I will run the back winch out and hook on something to act like a anchor . And with a full size optima under my seat the winches pull like champs

Yeah when I was stuck nose down in that hole the only help was 2 400cc quads so after using jacks and logs and everything we could to prep my mander we had to anchor one to a big tree then hook it's winch up to the other quad then to me. I thought we might rip the middle quad in half but getting some logs under my rear tires and putting one under the body to roll on we actually got it out slowly.
Troy, how did you mount those rear winches? Custom fab on the mander under your dump bed?

On the mander I built a dual exhaust and mounted my winch where the stock muffler sat .
It's a 4500 lb winch in there
