Radio Programming for Dummies

I have couple of the Baofeng UV-5R’s on the way and have no idea how or what to program them to?
I have read that you need to download chirp, but that’s about it!

Well if you never ordered a program cable then chirp is not going to work, then you better learn to program them the old fashion way, it will take some time. The good news is the uv-5rs are the least fussiest to program with chirp. Best to use boafeng software if you have offsets.

Any of your buddies have radios programmed? you could get them to send you their programming list so everyone you ride with is got everything named the same. I have even programmed in GMRS freq as some people use those out their as well. This is also a fun little site

Need help... I've programmed a number of radios with my Mac. After doing so I haven't done it for a while. Since then I have upgraded my OSX and renewed my Norton AV. I have also since downloaded the latest chirp and given it "trusted" status in preferences. The program opens fine and I can DL the programming from my UV-82 radios I bought from Ray. But when I try to access the saved csv's or other files on my hard drive through the chirp program I get an error. Anyone else see this? Suggestions?



Also, trying to program a guys UV-5RTP but with this radio no matter which radio I chose in chirp it won't DL the current programming from it?

If only there was some one on here that sold programmed radios. When you program your own make sure you understand CTCSS, offset, tone, NFM, FM SWR, squelch and a bunch more setting that are needed or not needed. There is way more in programming a radio than just entering a frequency. There is a lot more to backcountry communication than just a radio, a proper antenna is just as important and so is a quality shoulder mic.

How about spending 35 dollars on a FTDI cable. Baofeng makes software to, not just chirp.

Thank you RGM. I’ll take a look at that. I have the Baofeng cable already and have programmed a lot of radios. Just don’t understand why it’s not letting me access my files so I can program others.

After trying a number of different things I moved a copy of the csv onto my desktop and was able to get it to import into chirp and program the radio. Wish I knew why I can’t access it in the sub folders on my hard drive.

So you only had one file and one radio without programming in it?
