The V2's are a heavier helmet but the weight shouldn't be a concern even for a child. The child helmets are usually lighter because the overall size is smaller.

It usually is an issue when larger kids, or small adults try and wear youth helmets because the helmet is only rated to a certain weight.

Even though he is using it for bmx racing it needs to fit very snug. The face portion should pinch his cheeks like a chipmunk and there should be minimal or no movement at all on his forehead. Any less than that its too big.

Old saying goes, get a $100 helmet for a $100 head...whats your childs head worth?
