Last year was my first year riding in the mountains yes, not my first year riding a sled. I've been in revy now maybe 10 times or so including this year. I'm just getting bored with boulder and frisby and want to try something new. I never said I was an experienced or pro rider, I know I'm not, and I have a long ways to go before I'm even close to that. I'm just saying I have no problems getting most places on my sled. I've been up chutes at turbo, been way out back of the ridge at frisby, it's just getting old and for some reason every time I usually go there it's tracked to death. Just looking for a challenge. No bragging or self conceitedness here, if that's how you took it I certainly didn't mean it like that. I appreciate your input tho. I would love to find someone who knows the area to take us into turtle....
I ride Boulder and Frisby almost every day, always fresh to be found. You just have to get off the beaten path. I rode in belly button deep all day today, just a couple of hundred feet from the road. If mountain sledding is getting old after the first year maybe you should take up figure skating????;)

I didn't take it as conceiteness, I just wanted to clarify if my comment was valid or not. I want other riders to have the best time they possibly can, understanding their skill level is critical to that when giving someone directions into foreign territory. IMO it's irresponsible of fellow riders to not ask the question when giving directions to strangers. A guy I rode with one time was given directions into an "experienced riders area" and it is a serious area with high risks, he was unaware of the risks for his first trip there, and also took a total mountain first timer there with him, they both left the area with a bad experience and put themselves in a risky situation because no one asked them a simple question. I respect you more for giving your honest answer.

x2 That's what I was thinking as well! I remember in my first couple of years of riding complaining the areas were always so pounded out and there was no fresh to be had. As you get to be a better rider you can get more off the beaten path and find the fresh stuff that all the guys that only want to ride in the wide open leave! Boulder is a huge area and I've never struggled to find some place fun to ride there. Maybe I'm just simple though! :D

That being said there is a lot of awesome terrain back turtle way and beyond. I've been back in there quite a ways and as everyone else has said it is some serious terrain back there and depending on the day there may not be anyone else around to help if you end up in trouble. I would recommend going in there with someone who knows the area well as many above have said.

Hey Modman know who your talking about and yes knowing what i know now i would defenitly have changed my tune that day. Sometimes you just get caught up in the excitement to ride and forget some of the basics.

Have had newbies under my belt and i will say i sure am treating them different than i treated the first newbie.

Hows the little one doing?? Been out riding much??

Ya rode in there last year at the end of March, day started off sunny and went in with some guys who really know the area, 3hrs later we got completely socked in and it definitely gets real hairy getting out when you can barely see the guy in front of you, very thankful for the guys I was riding with that day

I heard its a hard place to get into and not worth your time unless you're turbod up. Can't be that hard can it?! I consider myself a fairly good mountain rider, riding a stock proclimb m8. I've went up kirkup trail a dozen times but haven't noticed that turn off, mainly cuz I wasn't lookin for it then I guess

It's a great area, but it can be a little hairy to climb into some days. It can get pretty icy sometimes. On the Kirkup Trail you will see the big yellow sign off to the right of the trail. Once you know where it is you will laugh that you didn't see it before....

On a side note, I have climbed up into Turtle with a 2000 Arctic Cat Sno Pro 440 136"..... THAT was exciting!!

JT - That was a wicked weekend!! I felt bad those guys turned around!! lol

It's not that I'm getting sick of them... See, it's hard to explain my situation without someone finding something to jump on my back for... See, when we go, there's always a couple people that are fine with the wide open spots on boulder and frisby, and I don't feel like two of us venturing off in the trees by ourselves in chest deep powder, that's asking for trouble there. I'm not totally used to riding super deep powder in the trees, although I manage to get around. When I said I'm getting sick of boulder and frisby I meant I'm sick of the same open spots every trip. This time there's 4 of us willing to venture to turtle this trip, all of which have relatively the same skill level. I didn't mean that statement as cocky or not interested in sledding..! Thanks modman, I'm just trying to be honest, not bragging about anything. If we get to the first climb thru those trees on the way to turtle that you guys are talking about and can't make it up that, I'm not Gonna be afraid to tell ya's, although I'm hoping that we're better then that LOL

Don't let them worry ya. When I got my first sled the friend I bought it from took me into Turtle by the heli tenure. Sounds like what they have described here, road ended and we went straight up along a gulley through the trees over to Monster Bowl and over Eagles pass into Sicamous side, then back over and down what he called the normal entrance to Turtle. Couldn't find my way again on my own but it wasn't that hard although I had a few challenges. It was my sixth ride or so on my first sled. It was a bluebird spring day with what I will call easier snow.

So...IMO it depends on weather and snow conditions......It can be dooable by a rookie with a good sled or under different conditions you would need to be a very good rider. It was an awsome trip and fantastic area. Getting a good rider that knows the area to tour you is the smart thing to do.

Been in the mountains for a few years about 8 not a real agresive rider can ride with most , but i've taken quite a few newbes out and the best advice I can give u is ride to the weakest rider. The guy ealier said his friend took him up to turtle mountain and it was great but with new riders it can go bad real fast, I prefere to start easy and let them have a little more practice first. Would u give a new driver a corvett and let him go, just to many things can go wrong real fast and how good would u feel if u were the one that took him their. Some guys won't admit to this but keep a eye on them, also I carry 500' of rope and 3 pulleys in case I need them and I have used the rope for other groups. Also carry a gps if u don't no the area it really helps, plus good supplys for a few days of staying their. Heard to many peaple say it will never happen but i've heard a few guys who have had to walk out for up to 3 days so pack it in with u for the worse case possible. I hope u have a good ride.

good suggestion but where do you store 500 ft of rope and pulleys? By the time I have first aid kits and survival supplies etc little room for anything extra.

My son has a m8 2011 lots of room under his seat and I carry the pulleys with me. We bought the 3/8" nylon rope from canadian tire , they come in 100' bundles. they can be unwound about 1' , put back together and I duct tape the connections to make one long rope. I also have a plastic box on the back of my apex but ever since I super charged the sled I use the container for carrying gas so my son carrys the rope now. I don't no what u are riding but ive used this rope a few times so I try to find the room to carry it. have a safe ride
