Power Pole for Yard Light?

On the bulb there will be printing. It will say how many watts and if it an hps(high pressure sodium), metal halide(mh) or mercury vapor(mv). Have a read or take a pic and post it up. You can take the wattage and google match it to lumens.
I would recommend a 400w high pressure sodium with a timer or photocell. It’s orange light but energy efficient.

I hope your clutching advice is better than your lighting advice.

Think I am gonna try these lights on my 30ft curved first and then see if I need to go higher.

I also see grandpa only has the current pole anchored into a 4" cement slab.
Been standing since 1978..........

You should read what I wrote. For the light coverage and long life combined with a timer and/or photocell, a 400w hps will be perfect. Prolly shoulda recommended a 200w or smaller hps. Last time I checked, almost every city in the world lights their streets with high pressure sodium. You know, when flying on airline at night, all the city lights below are orange. Remind me how LED’s are gonna rule the world Mr. Light bright. Let’s hear your suggestion. I didn’t see your suggestion. How come?
Furthermore, the OP’s old light was a really inefficient mercury vapor with a photocell which runs from dusk to dawn. My light recommendation, although a bit on the big side, would be same cost or lower but with a ton of light coverage.
Further furthermore, I would recommend a 30 ft class 6 pressure treated pole for the yard light. Backfill it with dirt, don’t concrete it in. Concrete will cause rot and your erect pole will fall over soon. If you no farm machinery, go with 25’ class 6. String a span of overhead #4 duplex to power the light. Find a power crew and offer beer, they often work for beer.
Kanedog pole fun fact-The correct depth a pole is buried is 10% of the length plus two feet. The is a world wide standard. Even in Africa. Minimum 5 foot depth for poles 30ft and less. The gain on a pole, the flat spot on a pole about 5ft above ground, is 12ft from the bottom of the pole. Cool right?

Watts are watts. Feel free to explain how your 400 watt lamp with close to 500 watt actual power draw is more efficient that his existing 100-175 watt existing. Sure it will be brighter but burn 4 times the power.

Wonder why the city is changing out all the HPS? If your west coast cities still have your favourite orange lights you green energy preachers are even more hypocritical.

A corn cob lamp is an option. What size lamp was in it? 175 watt? 50 watt led would be more than equivalent light.

If you want to upgrade the fixture, depends on what you want it to look like, the mounting location, and what wiring is there for the existing power feed. . Wallpack vs flood light style.

2.) I agreed that a 50 watt LED (of any type) would provide an equivalent to his existing lamp which is likely a maximum of 175 watts.

I personally would choose to upgrade the whole fixture to something more attractive.

Back to the OP, he has found a 55 watt fixture, likely LED. He will likely be happy with its performance and price. So topic closed, he doesn’t need further recommendations.

Yes new fixture is led.
Light is affixed to my house.
Light has a photo cell but I only ran it when I needed it. It’s on a switching the house.
New fixture will be installed in the same manner.
Mostly used in the winter when I’m cleaning my driveway.

I think LED’s aren’t quite at the quality and reliability they need to be yet. Give them another five-ten years to develop. The technology moves super fast nowadays so advances happen much quicker than the 1950’s.
I don’t like the light quality of LED’s. It’s an intense, hard white light almost like a bright spot light in yer faaaaaaace. It needs to be diffused or softer and provide a more uniform coverage. The LED emitted light actually hurts my brain when I’m standing in the light. I’m getting a head ache as we speak just thinking about them.
I do like the bright af option for motion lights. Hps cant do that.
To sum up the Kanedog LED opinion, not enough coverage, too hard of light, not reliable enough yet and effects your brain waves. I will wait for future LED advancements to switch over. Shouldn’t be too long I suspect.
