It would seem electric vehicles are taking over. And that has huge implications for a related industry: lithium mining and production.
Lithium-ion batteries are what power today’s electric cars and trucks and EV giant Tesla (ticker: TSLA) is planning for 3 terawatt-hours of battery-making capacity to supply its vehicles by 2030. That is an increase of more than 50 times today’s available supply.

So you are anti-mining? What about jobs?

If every manufacturer was required to build around a standard shape and sized battery would be a start as well .
Obviously different sizes would be required for the size of the product?
This crap that every manufacturer can build just a bit different shape or size and then after 5 years or so the item is obsolete or costs so much that it’s junk ?
Could go on and on about the same thing with all kinds of items?
Pick on wheels for trucks , cars ? Lol
Why do we need so many different bolt patterns and thread sizes ? Make it so only a few and manufacturers have to build around that . Jeesh
Big trucks are that way for chit sakes .

Nope....myself included. I’ve always said that a DC traction motor is by far a superior method of powering any vehicle. The problem is the current battery technology. It’s just not up to the task for anything but light loads in urban areas. Once someone comes up with an electric power system that matches fossil fuels for capacity, reliability and ease of use, I’m in. For you on your farm, an electric SxS would be the cats ass. Not so much for recreational use.

I think another key item with this is right-to-repair. A lot (but not all) of the cells used in these big battery packs are of a common type, if the schematics and parts were available many of these large battery packs could have much extended life spans if either dealers or independent shops could repair components within the battery. Much in the same way an engine isn't thrown out because of a worn valve guide, the guide is just replaced.

How many fossil fuel jobs have been lost or are gonna be ? Or is it just mining jobs that should be a concern ?

The lithium battery option from polaris was around $8000 per machine. Couldn’t justify that at the time. Have already replaced one set of batteries on one unit. Still cheaper than running a gas engine but was hoping for more battery life.

Would like to know the weight ratio of these said batteries in your unit's? Also if they come out with this in Dec and it has a 50kw battery i can imagine how much that will weigh, let alone charging time, unless 1 has a 75-100 amp plug in, in place for faster charge time.

I think we will have a much easier time gaining access with nearly silent vehicles that can be charged by sunlight, wind, and water. Don't you think? What if you can have 100 miles of range per charge?

Quick story time. I tried to buy a Ranger EV about 2 weeks ago. Called 15 different polaris dealers looking for one. None available anywhere and a 3 month wait for a new one (why wait 3 months when there is a new version coming out in December?). Ok, so now look on kijiji and try to find a used RangerEV. Absolutely none anywhere. A couple new ones in Quebec and Ontario. Too far away and too much hassle. One dealer asked me why I would want electric. I said we only use it to check our crops and all our land is within 5 miles of our house. Nearly no maintenance. No radiator to plug, no hot exhaust parts starting fires, no CVT transmission, no oil changes, no exhaust fumes, no loud engine noise, no air filter, no fuel filter, no belts, no starter. Anyways, ended up buying a ranger 1000 ($0 document fee by the way) which will be getting sold the second I can get my hands on the new rangerEV with zero battery/powertrain.

that’s exactly my situation too, bought a new 1000 just before Christmas but have an 2018 900 and and older 800, that are going to be sold and I’ll try to get an EV, Polaris or Can am I really don’t care whichever I can get, EV might not be for every application but for somethings I think a guy will make the change and never look back!

its interesting I was talking to one dealer yesterday and it was like I was asking about a GM at a Ford dealership, didn’t seem to know much at all and didn’t seem that interested in finding out??

That'll cause some problems. Did the wire break? This stuff works really good....

Gonna try that. Terminals need to be cleaned fairly often on my rangers.

Textron, no. But Cat needs to step up the product and the dealer support or they are going to bleed. Die hard Cat guy here, but my faith is dwindling.
