Those pistons did not die from old age. Something went wrong. Either overheated or no oil. New pistons won't last long if you don't figure out what caused the problem.
Check your oil supply lines and maybe replace the oil filter as well, to be on the safe side? Be sure to check oil pump adjustment when together
P.s. I think your shop manual is at my place still?
I think he should put a 880 big bore in it..... so he can keep up to CJ

X2 - Both pistons have the same scoring, they didn't fail from wear. Oil or cooling related for sure.
